Whitecaps / Rapids Game Summary
The Vancouver Whitecaps, if they were smart, will have hightailed it out of Denver as soon as they could under cover of the night, because in the match against the Rapids of Colorado they absolutely stole the road win.
The ‘Caps team was outshot badly, as Colorado fired off 17 attempts, of which 6 were on target, while Vancouver could only muster a lousy 3 shots, with the only one on target registering the lone goal of the game.
But, fortunately on this night the poached strike by speedy Jamaican forward Darren Mattocks was enough to hijack the win.
A mistake by the central defender Drew Moor who scuffed his clearance, following a Jordan Harvey cross into the box, was punished by Mattocks who jumped on the mishit ball as quick as a whippet and patiently tucked it into the bottom right corner.
In a delicious piece of irony, the mistake was made by the same player who essentially had Mattocks sent off in the last encounter between these two teams.
Defence holds out
Colorado dominated the possession with 60% of the play and it showed in the huge discrepancy between the shots. However, Joe Cannon kept out all six shots on target by the Rapids, and a much improved Vancouver defence tackled well and made sure most shots were taken from well outside the Vancouver goalmouth.
Robson debuts in a solid performance
He showed well for the ball and demonstrated his eye for goal with a whipped shot from about 35 yards that just flew over the bar.
Since the Vancouver midfield has only conjured up a solitary goal from that area of the park all year, Robson’s play indicates a significant upgrade.
Man of the Match
Joe Cannon wasn’t spectacular, but he marshalled the back line well, and made all the stops necessary.
Play of the Match
The snap reaction and finish by Darren Mattocks on the Moor gaffe earned the youngster his 4th goal of the year, to assume the lead in the scoring race for Whitecaps players.
“It’s a big win for us on the road in a tough place to come,” said Rennie. “It’s very hot here and obviously a big night for the Rapids being the Fourth of July. So for us to come in here and play as disciplined and professional as we did is a big positive.” – Coach Martin Rennie
