The expansion draft also saw Seattle lose 2 starting defenders, which is a big loss and this is especially the case since G Kasey Keller retired.

The 2012 MLS SuperDraft takes place in January of next year and Vancouver has the 2nd pick, Portland has the 8th pick, and Seattle has the 15th pick.

Here is a look at some team needs for the Northwest MLS Clubs for this upcoming season.

Seattle Sounders

The Sounders may need to pick up some help on defense for the next season since Keller is retired and the team lost starting defenders James Riley and Tyson Wahl in the expansion draft.

Picking up some help on defense is the key, as their offense scored the most goals in the league and their D, which will look totally different next season, gave up the 4th fewest goals.

Vancouver Whitecaps

To say the Whitecaps need a lot of help on both sides of the field is an understatement, as they scored the fewest goals in the league and gave up the 3rd most. Hey there is a reason they finished in the basement of the Western Conference and have the 2nd pick in the 2102 MLS SuperDraft.

Montreal selected Whitecaps MF Jeb Brovsky with their 5th pick in the 2011 MLS Expansion Draft and Philadelphia picked up MF Nizar Khalfan after he was waived by Vancouver, who also waived DF Bilal Duckett.

Whitecaps’ president Bob Lenarduzzi stated after these moves were made, “We finished bottom of the league last season. We need to get better.”

Good call.

Portland Timbers

Portland missed out on the playoffs last season and they have the 8th pick in the 2102 MLS SuperDraft.

The Timbers also have to pick up some new players to help them on both sides of the field, as they had a goal differential of -8 last season.

Shoring up the D may be a little more important this upcoming season.
