Whitecaps/ Impact Game Intro
The Vancouver Whitecaps second MLS go round in MLS kicks off with a cracker of a match as Canadian compatriots the Montreal Impact come to town on Saturday. The newest addition to the league has built an experienced roster, but has had a scant seven weeks or so to create a team.
The new boys will be eager to get off to a positive start and the energy in BC Place should be electric Saturday afternoon with the national rivalry.
The Vancouver Whitecaps supporters will be out in full force in anticipation of a much improved year.
The Impact’s strength is in midfield where they will need to dominate to have any hope of starting their MLS tenure with a win. Captain Davy Arnaud leads a solid, hard-working group along with Canadian Patrice Bernier, Justin Mapp and Brazilian Felipe Martins.
Jamaican goalie Donovan Ricketts controls his area with an imposing 6’4” presence, but will be behind a relatively untested back line that the Vancouver forwards need to attack to be successful.
The Montreal forwards are thin, as they rely on aging striker Eddie Sebrango and MLS SuperDraft top pick Andrew Wenger, who played college soccer last year.
The Whitecaps are healthy, rested and confident following their Disney tournament success down in FLA. Sebastien Le Toux will most likely lead the front line following his dominant pre-season performances.
Fleet forward Darren Mattocks, second in the MLS SuperDraft selections, will get the opportunity to face fellow super rookie Wenger, but likely in a reserve capacity off the bench.
Watch for the ‘Caps to come out flying in their season opener as they attempt to get their new campaign off to a flyer.
Montreal will be just as keen to make a strong first impression but the difference in talent levels will show through in the end.
The newly rebuilt Vancouver defence will provide the foundation for the Whitecaps.
Look for Vancouver to come out victors in a 2-1 triumph.
