MLS Matchup Report: LA Galaxy vs. Vancouver Whitecaps

Galaxy vs Whitecaps Insight

The Vancouver Whitecaps host a team for the first time in six games, with the loaded LA Galaxy arriving at BC Place.

This game is a huge one for both organizations.

7:00 PM pt
LA 8-10-2 (4-5-1 V)
VANWH 8-6-6 (5-1-3 H)

An LA win would pull them within a point of Vancouver, while on the other hand, a ‘Caps victory would propel them to a 7 point gap and a huge boost in morale.

It should be a barnburner.

LA Galaxy

LA stormed to a 5-3 win over the Portland Timbers in their last match on the weekend, with all their goals coming via the big three of David Beckham, Landon Donovan and strike partner Robbie Keane.

All three players provide not just skill, but veteran wiles and leadership. It is an intimidating proposition for the Vancouver defence, but expect Jay DeMerit and crew to play inspired tonight.

The weak link in the armour however for LA is their suspect defence. It has leaked 32 goals in just 20 matches, which is a whopping 9 more conceded than Vancouver. The ‘Caps will need to attack tonight.

Vancouver Whitecaps

Barry Robson looks as though he is gradually settling in, but now it is Jamaican Dane Richards and new Scottish acquisition Kenny Miller’s turns to look for chemistry among their teammates.

Alain Rochat (too many cautions) and Eric Hassli (ankle strain) are both missing, so coach Martin Rennie will need to exploit his bench strength.

Michael Nanchoff got a first start last time out and the coach may have a few surprises again tonight.

DeMerit and YP Lee need to draw on their considerable experience to steady the back line if the Whitecaps want to take something from this game.

This game may have come too quick for the Whitecaps’ new look lineup to work smoothly.

It will be a difficult game for them to play with any true sense of familiarity amongst the entire team.

Look for Vancouver to fall 2-1 to a rolling Galaxy outfit.

The game is sold out. The Southsiders will be loud, I don’t think its too “BIG” a match for VFC. I think we’ll see a 2-2 draw tonight.
