UW – Week 1 College Football Game Summary
Washington has high hopes this season after last season when they had their first winning campaign since 2002 and scored a HUGE upset over Nebraska in the Holiday Bowl.
In their opening game this season the Huskies escaped with a 3-point win against an Eastern Washington squad, who are the defending FCS national champions.
Yeah, I said escaped with a win, as UW CB Desmond Trufant intercepted a pass in the end zone with only 29 seconds left to preserve the win. Even though UW ended the game with an INT this win tells me the Huskies may have trouble this season against legit passing teams, as EWU QB Bo Levi Mitchell torched the UW secondary passing for a whopping 473 yards and 3 TD.
On D the Huskies did hold Eastern Washington to only 31 rushing yards , but their pass defense leaves a lot to be desired.
On offense the Huskies had a solid and well balanced game, as QB Keith Price passed for 102 yards with 3 TD and 0 INT in his first home start since taking over for the departed Jake Locker. Also, RB Chris Polk rushed for 125 yards averaging a solid 5.4 yards per carry and that is a good sign, as if Polk and the Huskies can run the ball it will help keep their suspect secondary on the sidelines.
The Huskies only won by 3 points to a non-BCS team and that is a little concerning and in their opener forced 4 turnovers while not committing any. So, I would say the Huskies had Lady Luck on their side.
Next week UW will face pass happy Hawaii, whose QB Bryant Moniz passed for over 5,000 yards last season, and the Huskies’ secondary will be under a lot of pressure again and if they play like they did against Eastern Washington they may be lucky to come away with a win.
Still, UW is 1-0 and you can’t argue their undefeated record!
