UW Huskies vs. Cal Golden Bears things to love & hate from Friday

Huskies beat Cal 21-13.

It was an ugly game, and closer than it needed to be, but the UW Huskies got the win.

Love ‘Em

Getting an Away Win

The Huskies got their first road win in over a year. Finally. This team needed to prove they could beat a quality squad away from Seattle, and did. Let’s make a habit out of it.

Austin Seferian-Jenkins

Mismatch. Unstoppable. Playmaker. Game-changer. However you want to describe Austin Seferian-Jenkins, the Dawgs landed an absolute athletic freak of nature and future NFL player when ASJ signed with Washington.

Seferian-Jenkins absolutely scorched Cal for 152 yards and a touchdown, with eight catches. He’s also been playing with a bad ankle all season, and could be seen limping at points on Saturday.

Can you imagine him fully healthy?

Regardless of his injury, he still scored the game winning touchdown Saturday and is having a monster season. His size, speed, and athleticism make him almost impossible to guard.

Bishop Sankey

Every week, Bishop Sankey is becoming a more and more lethal.  29 carries for 189 yards and two touchdowns speaks for itself. Remember when the running game was a concern?

But beyond just the stats, Sankey continues to flash excellent vision and terrific quickness and open-field speed. He’s great avoiding big tackles, and really does well bouncing off of tackles.

He’s only going to get better.

I’ll have a detailed post on how he’s doing later this week so stay tuned.

Hate ‘Em

I hate penalties. We have had so many penalties all season, and it’s killing us. Can Sark get this team to get it together please? It’s really getting ridiculous, and to boot it’s making me angry.

Sorry, but I’ve been railing about UW’s frequent high penalty counts all season. 12 for 108 yards on Saturday was nothing out of the ordinary. Penalties are KILLING us. It hasn’t specifically cost us a game yet, but it will sooner or later at this rate, and it just makes it harder to win anyway.

There is no reason this team should still be making this many dumb mistakes a game.

I want to see the players running laps on Monday.

Turnovers and Fumbles

Washington and Cal combined for 8 turnovers Saturday, with four each. Both teams had three lost fumbles each. Those are great numbers if you enjoy anarchy and chaos in football games, but not so much otherwise. It’s hard to find one specific reason the Huskies couldn’t hold onto the ball, since different players kept fumbling it.

So we’ll just have to hope it doesn’t happen again.

Maybe Sark can give the boys a “holding on to a football” tutorial Monday, after the “don’t commit dumb penalties” tutorial.

Cal Injuries

As a fan of a team that’s dealt with injury losses this year, Cal fans have my sympathy. The Golden Bears came into the game already missing star wide receiver Keenan Allen. Watching California quarterback Zack Maynard go down and not get up was crushing.

He was carted off the field with an apparent knee injury and his status is uncertain.

You never want to see another player go down like that, and my prayers are with Maynard for a fast recovery.

It sure wasn’t pretty, but the Dawgs finally got a road win and have finally beat two solid teams back to back.

Next up, Utah is coming to town.
