Steven Charles Emtman was born on April 16th, 1970 in Spokane, Washington and became one of a few Northwest athletes to be selected first overall in the NFL Draft.
He grew up in Cheney, Washington and after a solid high school career in his home town, he accepted a scholarship to play with the Washington Huskies in Seattle.
He started his college career in 1998, but rose to prominence during the glory days of the Washington Huskies playing Defensive End for one of the more dominant squads in the Nation at that time.
In 1990 he helped the Huskies to a 10-2 record and an eventual Rose Bowl win, and in 1991 he anchored a Washington team that went undefeated and won the National Championship.
A consensus All-American, Emtman won the Outland Trophy, Lombardi Award, was the Bill Willis Award winner and the UPI Lineman of the Year.
He also was being named the Pac-10 Defensive Player of the Year during his impressive junior year of 1991 and he finished fourth in the ballot for the Heisman Trophy.
In 1996 Emtman was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame.
After his Junior year, Emtman decided to enter the NFL Draft where he was selected first overall by the Indianapolis Colts. After some flashes of brilliance, Emtman ended up on the Injured Reserve list in his rookie year – something that would happen in each of his first three seasons as a pro.
Emtman would go onto play two more seasons in the NFL – one with the Miami Dolphins and one with the Washington Redskins before calling it a career after the 1997 season at the tender age of 27.
Steve Emtman’s NFL career was cut dreadfully short by injury.
Now Steve Emtman is active in his home town of Spokane where he is a successful real estate developer. He has appeared in movies and has kept in touch with his football roots as a volunteer defensive line coach with the Spokane Shock.
