Washington Huskies breaking news Shawn Kemp Jr. out 6-8 weeks

Dawgs front court takes a blow

Head coach Lorenzo Romar announced today that UW Huskies forward Shawn Kemp Jr. will be out for the next 6-8 weeks, due to a tear in his patellar tendon.

The injury won’t require surgery.

This is not a great way to kick off the upcoming season. Kemp—who plays power forward—was seen as a possible breakout candidate for 2012.

Not to mention, the Huskies front court is already thin.

Washington’s roster is filled with veterans, including two seniors at the guard positions, as well as senior center Aziz N’diaye.

The Huskies thinnest position is forward, where no one stands higher than a sophomore.

Entering his second year with Washington, Kemp was expected to take that starters role and run with it. Now it’s unknown when he’ll return, let alone what kind of shape he’ll be in.

The sophomore played limited minutes as a freshman in 2011-12, averaging just 6.5 per game. But it didn’t stop Kemp from leading the Huskies in field goal percentage (55.2 percent), while registering the fourth most blocks (16 in 28 games).

Coach Romar stated that he hopes Kemp can return in time for Pac-12 play—which kicks off January 5th against Washington State.
