Washington St. vs. SDSU – Week 3 Recap & Game Summary

Washington State 24 San Diego State 42

Venue: Qualcomm Stadium, SAN DIEGO, CA
Attendance: 57,286

Washington State started off the SDSU game well with an 80-yards TD pass to WR Marquess Wilson from QB Marshall Lobbestael on the first play from scrimmage and they kept on rolling until the 4th quarter rolled around.

In the final quarter the Cougars were outscored by the Aztecs 21-0 to lose by 18. The Cougars committed 3 turnovers and their offense, which led the nation in scoring before the game, could not come up big in the clutch.

WSU Loses To SDSU In Week 3

Lobbestael passed for 368 yards with 3 TD, but he was picked up twice. Besides the defense that gave up 273 passing yards and 227 rushing yards the WSU ground game was less than stellar only racking up 51 rushing yards.

Freshman Rickey Galvin was the leading rusher and did average a decent 4.5 yards per carry, but he only got 11 carries in the game.

The dagger in the heart of the Cougars came with only 7:36 left in the game when QB Lobbestael fumbled the ball and SDSU recovered and went on to score a TD.

The Cougars big issue on defense was stopping the run and that will likely continue since they gave up 227 total rushing yards with Aztecs’ RB Ronnie Hillman galloping for 190 yards.

WSU showed their offensive moxy with the passing game, but unless they can run the ball and maybe more importantly stop the run this may be another long season for the Cougars.

Next Up: The Cougars have next week off and then on October 1st they begin Pac 12 play facing Colorado on the road.
