Washington St. vs. Idaho St. – Week 1 Recap

WSU – Week 1 College Football Game Summary

WSU is coming off a 2-10 season and lighting up the scoreboard 64-21 against Idaho State in their 2011 opener gives the team some confidence for their season.

Sure, the Bengals play in the weak Big Sky conference in the FCS and they have lost 11 straight games, but any win is a good win for a Cougars’ team that has struggled, big time, for the last few seasons.

The win was a costly win for the Cougars though, as starting QB Jeff Tuel fractured his clavicle.

WSU Wins BIG in Week 1 CFB Action

Backup Marshall Lobbestael came in and passed for 230 yards with 2 TD and 0 INT and where the Cougars shined was in the running game rushing for a whopping 289 yards.

The freshman RB duo of Marcus Mason and Rickey Galvin combined for 152 rushing yards and that gives the Cougars hope, as they have lacked a legit running attack in the last few seasons.

One big cause for concern is the fact that the Cougars allowed Idaho State to pass for 430 yards. They did come up with an INT, but how will their secondary do facing good passing teams this season such as San Diego State, Stanford, and Arizona State? That remains to be seen.

At least the Cougars played solid run defense holding Idaho State to only 23 rushing yards.

WSU scored on their first 4 possessions and led 40-0 at halftime. While senior Lobbestael had a good game the loss of Tuel may really hurt.

A WSU spokesman stated that it is not known how long the QB will be out for and the less time the better, as many thought he would have a breakout season.

WSU is 1-0 and they face UNLV and that is definitely a winnable game, but the Cougars’ secondary and the health of Tuel are major concerns for head coach Paul Wulff, who is really on the hot season this season in Pullman.
