Covering the spread: The Washington State Cougars

Winning Mentality

For those of you out there that like to occasionally place a wager on sports to fill that hole in your pocket, this article about the Washington State Cougars is for you.

Despite it being pretty early in retrospect, some of the very first college football betting lines are out; one of which includes the Pac 12 point spread.

Evident from this very early point spread is the fact that Oregon and USC will be the favorites to win the Pac 12, with a crucial game occurring between the two when the Ducks visit USC in week 10 of the college football season.

Although USC and Oregon will be garnering much of the publicity and recognition within the Pac 12 this year, the Washington State Cougars will be looking to make a name for themselves this 2012 college football season.

Jeff Tuel will likely be leading the Cougar charge in 2012

New head coach Mike Leach has Washington State fans giddy about the potential for their offense to become one of the most potent in the nation.

If you want to make your own pocketbook more potent, here are the games that the Washington State Cougars will cover the spread in during the 2012 Pac 12 football season.

Week Four: Colorado at Washington State (-11)

ExpectMike Leach to pull all of the right strings in his first Pac 12 game against the Colorado Buffaloes.

If you have not read any of the other great odds preview articles on NW Sports Beat, the Buffaloes will likely be Pac 12 bottom-feeders once again. Although they are not intended to have a season as poor as 2011, their 2012 season will not be much better.

A still developing defense and stingy offense will be exposed by the Cougars asMike Leach’sair attack runs rampant all over Colorado en route to a blowout win.

Expect the Cougars to prevail by more than 11 points in this game.

Ok, ok…I know that this list was a lot shorter than what a lot of you were expecting, but let me try to cool your nerves with a little bit of analysis of this years Washington State Cougar football team.

Needless to say, there is a lot of uncertainty surrounding this football team heading into the 2012 season under new head coach Mike Leach.

Despite uncertainty, expect Cougar fans to come out in the masses to watch their favorite team in 2012.

Just because there is only a definite win in terms of point spread in the 2012 season does not mean the Cougars are going to win only one Pac 12 game this season.

In fact, I believe that the Cougars will be able to play spoiler in many games they are playing in, but cannot put those games up on this list definitively as these will be very close games that will only be decided through the actual game, not through careful analysis of each team’s style of play and roster.

Jeff Tuel and Marquess Wilson will be crucial to the Cougar offensive attack (as should be obvious to any Cougar fan) and will provide for many highlights this upcoming football season.

On the defensive side of the ball, the Cougars are improving as well. Stellar play by their defensive line should bolster an already talented defense, thus giving the Cougar offense something to play with, not against.

Unfortunately for Cougar fans (and for any analyst of the Cougars), the uncertainty surrounding expectations makes it very difficult to predict just what this team is going to be.

On one extreme, they could be contenders in the Pac 12 North. On the other, they could become a bigger disappointment than the 2011 Arizona Wildcats.

One thing is for certain though: if you put money down on the Cougars beating the Buffaloes by at least 11 points, you will be happy with your investment.
