Moments In Time – WSU Cougars
QB Ryan Leaf
While Leaf is considered to be one of the biggest NFL draft busts ever you cannot take away what he accomplished while at Washington State. In his junior season Leaf was the Pac 10 Offensive Player of the Year, set the Pac 10 record for most TD’s in a season, which has been broken, and was a first team All American.
He was a finalist for the Heisman trophy finishing 3rd and led The Cougars to their first ever Pac 10 title and their first Rose Bowl appearance in 67 years.
QB Drew Bledsoe
Like Leaf Bledsoewas the starting QB for only 3 years deciding to go pro after his junior season. And oh what a junior season he had being named Pac 10 Offensive Player of the Year and leading the Cougars to a Copper Bowl win passing for 476 yards and 2 TD’s in the game. He holds the WSU record of passing yards in a game (476), single-season pass completions (241), and single-season passing yards (3,246).
He was the #1 pick in the 1993 draft.
QB/HB/P Ed Goddard
Goddard did it all for the Cougars when he was a first team All-American quarterback three straight years from 1934-1937.
He never led the Cougars to the Rose Bowl, but he was amazing in the backfield and wound up being the #2 pick in the 1937 NFL draft.
OL Mel Hein
Hein not only was a great player on the offensive line, but he also played on the defensive line as well. He is a member of the College Football Hall of Fame, as well as the Pro Football Hall of Fame, and became the only offensive lineman to ever with the NFL MVP award.
In 1930 he was an All American and in one game facing Idaho he had 8 interceptions.
QB Jason Gesser
Gesser was a 3-year starter at QB for the Cougars and finished his career with 8,104 passing yards and 69 TD and is the 3rd most efficient passer in the history of the Pac 10. He has more wins than any QB in WSU history and he is the only player ever that has captained the Cougars in 3 straight seasons.
In his last season under center he was named Co-Pac 10 Offensive Player of the year and finished 7th in the Heisman voting.
