Things We Learned about Washington St. Cougars Hoops in 2011/12

Season Analysis

The Washington State Cougars finished near the bottom of the Pac 12 this season, but they ended the season with a winning record (19-18) and they lost to Pitt in the final of the College Basketball Invitational.

Not the worst result in the world, in fact they did the Pac 12 proud in my opinion.

Here are 5 things were learned about the 2011-2012 Washington State Cougars this season.

1. Fight

The Cougars had some fight in them. Not much was expected this season from WSU and there were a couple of times when things did not look good, but the Cougars showed some fight when the chips were down.

Before the Pac 12 season WSU lost 3 straight and they lost 4 of their last 6 games, but after that they won their next 6 games before conference play began.

The Cougars lost 4 of their first 5 Pac 12 games, but came back to win 2 in a row and for the rest of the season never lost more than 2 games in a row.

Something to build on at least right?

2. WSU was no pushover at home

While the Cougars were not a good road team in Pac 12 play they were 5-5 in Pullman including wins over Stanford, who won the NIT this season, and Big Dance bound Cal.

Ok they barely got in, but still. A win is a win is a win.

Brock Motum

Brock Motum (18.1 ppg 6.5 ppg) had a good season

3. Hope

This season gives WSU fans hope for next season.

The players that are coming back give the Cougars a lot of high hopes this season. Leading rebounder Brock Motum (18.1 ppg 6.5 ppg) had a good season and he and 3rd leading scorer Reggie Moore (10.2 ppg) will both be back next season.

4. FG%

The Cougars could shoot the pill and play D by george.  While the Cougars only ranked 172nd in the nation in scoring they could shoot the rock ranking 4th n the Pac 12 and 52nd in the nation in team FG% and they ranked 5th in the Pac 12 in team defense.

5. Solid freshman season

DaVonte Lacy ranked 4th on the Cougars in scoring this season and he showed some flashes of great play with 14 games scoring in double figures and at home against Oregon and Oregon State he went for 18 points and 19 points respectively.

With the juniors of Motum and Moore coming back with Lacy WSU may be a team to deal with in the Pac 12 next season.

Biggest Wins for WSU this season: Oregon State, Stanford, Cal, and Pitt
