2012 Washington St. Cougars BCS Odds

College Football Futures | Washington State

There is a reason that sportsbooks don’t even have odds on Washington State to win the BCS title this season, as being a long shot would actually be a step up for a Cougars’ squad that only won 2 games last season and 1 of those was against the football powerhouse of Montana State.

To say head coach Paul Wulf is on the hot season is a MAJOR understatement since he has led the Cougars to 5 wins in his 3 years at the helm including going 2-25 in conference play.

All is not lost for the Cougars, who return QB Jeff Tuel and have a legit WR duo in Jared Karstetter and Marquess Wilson, who combined for 117 catches in 2010.

Also, redshirt freshman RB Rickey Galvin may give WSU some rushing offense, which the team has lacked for several seasons.

Cappers Picks NCAA Handicapping

The Cougars must come away with TD’s when they get to the red zone and in an interesting stat WSU only got the end zone 60% of the time last season when they were in the red zone.

The big issue for the Cougars is not on offense but on defense, as can they stop opposing teams from lighting up the scoreboard? Not likely. Last season the Cougars ranked dead last in the Pac 10 in run defense, pass efficiency defense, and scoring defense.

The D has some up and coming young players, but they have to step up this season, as the Cougars have to step out of the “rebuilding” term that they have been labeled the last few years.

The schedule may have a couple of gimmies, I say may loosely, in Idaho State and UNLV, but they head south to play a solid San Diego State squad in their last game before Pac 12 play begins.

They face top 10 preseason teams of Stanford at home and Oregon on the road, but the home games facing Oregon State, Arizona State, and Utah are ones that are key games that they may have to win, well at least 2 of them, for Wulf to keep his job.

A .500 would be HUGE for the Cougars, but don’t count on it.
