For some programs, it’s the difference of being able to close out a team, as opposed to just outlasting a team. For the Washington State Cougars, it’s the difference between being able to execute late in the third quarter, early fourth quarter, and not letting winnable ball games slip through their fingers.

Which is exactly what happen on Saturday against San Diego State, and why it has been the point of emphasis in practice for head coach Paul Wulff.

The Cougars haven’t had too many opportunities to take a lead into the fourth quarter. For head coach Paul Wulff and staff, that has been the message in practice this week. Recognizing the importance of the situation you are in, and not letting the momentum shift back to your opponent.

State Of The Cougs - September 21st Edition

Wulff highlighted a fourth quarter series on Saturday in which, down by 11, the Cougs had forced SDSU into a three and out. On the ensuing drive, the Cougs marched into the red zone and subsequently turned the ball over. Which then led to an Aztecs scoring drive on the next possession, sealing the ball game.

For Paul Wulff, this was the turning point in the game where the teams lack of focus, and fourth quarter experience lost him the ball game. Wulff and staff will try and replicate fourth quarter situations during practice to try to get his offense acclimated to these very moments. Which Wullf believes his Cougars will be in this season more often then not.

Cougars notes:

QB Jeff Tuel, who has been out with a broken left clavical, had an x-ray on Sunday. Team doctors did say that Tuel’s injury is healing normally, and he has been cleared to start light throwing in practice. The timetable for Tuel’s return to the field has not changed.

OL Andrew Roxas (sprained ankle) and TE Aaron Dunn (strained quadriceps) will skip practice this week. Both will be reevaluated in the week and both are hopeful that they will return to practice next week.
