Trail Blazers vs. Hornets Preview | Handicapping | Betting Odds Jan. 16

The Matchup

After a hot start the Portland Trail Blazers have cooled off, big time, and have lost 3 straight games. On top of that they have only won 1 road game on the season (1-4). However, there is a good chance they will get back in the W column facing a Hornets’ team that has the worst record in the Western Conference, has lost 3 straight, and is only 1-5 at home.

While the Hornets are legit on the glass, ranking 3rd in the league in rebounds per game, they are really struggling on offense only ranking 27th in the league in scoring.

The Blazers’ offense is solid ranking 7th in the league in scoring and they have scored over 100 points in 4 of their last 5 games. However, their D has struggled lately giving up over 100 points in 2 of their last 3 games.

LaMarcus Aldridge (22.8 ppg 7.8 rpg) has combined for 58 points and 22 rebounds in the last 2 games against the Hornets, but in the Blazers last game he struggled only going 7/21 from the field.

Aldridge will need help on the boards in this game since Portland’s leading rebounder Marcus Camby will likely be on the sidelines for a 2nd straight game with an ankle injury.

For the Hornets to snap their 3-game losing streak they will need good scoring games from Eric Gordon (21 ppg) and Jarrett Jack (15 ppg) and the C tandem of Chris Kaman (7.4 rpg) and Emeka Okafor (8.1 rpg) must play well on the boards.

The Blazers do not have much size, especially since Camby is out and Greg Oden is still inactive and they have to pack the lane so Kaman and Okafor do not dominate the paint.

Nicolas Batum scored a season high 29 points in the Blazers last game and if Gerald Wallace (14.8 ppg) struggles to score, which he has done on the road this season, he will have to help Aldridge out on offense.

The Hornets have lost 5 straight at home and they have not lost 6 straight at home since the 2006 season.

Blazers vs Rockets Free Prediction

  • This season the Blazers are 6-5-1 ATS with an O/U record of 6-6 and the Hornets are 5-7 ATS with an O/U record of 4-8.
  • In some betting trends for this Western Conference match up the Blazers are 1-8 ATS in their last 9 road games.
  • 1-4 ATS in their last 5 games vs. a team with a losing S.U. record.
  • They have an Under record of 5-1 in their last 6 road games.
  • The Hornets are 2-5 ATS in their last 7 games overall, 0-5 ATS in their last 5 home games.
  • They have an Under record of 5-1 in their last 6 games.

Pick: The Blazers have not played well on the road, but I think playing the struggling Hornets is just what the Dr. ordered.

Portland’s offense will continue to play well, as they will win this game and cover the 5-point spread.
