Portland Trail Blazers: Championship odds approaching 2014-15 NBA season

Rip City Championship Odds

When you think about the 2014-15 NBA season, the Portland Trail Blazers don’t come across as championship favorites. Their showing last year was impressive to say the least, but to win a title, it will have to go through the powers out West — not to mention at least one power out East — to make it happen.

All that said, Portland will enter training camp with 40/1 odds at the 2015 Larry O’Brien Trophy. That ties them with the Indiana Pacers and Miami Heat for 10th in the Association.

A few thoughts should come to mind for Trail Blazers fans. For starters, aren’t the Blazers better than the Heat and Pacers? After all, Miami is showing a new-look roster in a post-LeBron James world, and the Pacers are short their two best players from last season: Paul George and Lance Stephenson.

Truth is, the Blazers should, and likely will, be better than both those squads in 2014-15. The talent in the Blazers starting lineup exceeds that of the two aforementioned organizations, and while the bench is another story, Portland showed what it can do with the first five handling the load last season.

All that said, Miami and Indiana are out East. Teams like the Washington Wizards and Toronto Raptors will certainly provide a challenge, but the Cleveland Cavaliers and Chicago Bulls appear to be the only true contenders is the league’s inferior conference.

Portland, on the other hand, must go through the San Antonio Spurs, Oklahoma City Thunder, Los Angeles Clippers and Golden State Warriors to make that happen, then there’s teams such as the Houston Rockets, Dallas Mavericks and Memphis Grizzlies that would all be contenders out East.

The other thought that should come to mind is that 10th actually isn’t so bad. In fact, if you believe the Blazers are truly better than both Indiana and Miami, that puts them right behind the Wizards, who have 33/1 odds at this juncture.

Consider the following: Portland entered the 2013 training camp as 150/1 favorites. That’s a significant jump from last season to now, and it shows that oddsmakers believe in what the Blazers did last season, and they believe it will translate to 2014-15.
