Adelman was born in Lynwood, California in 1946 and was a star player at Loyola University of Los Angeles, which is now Loyola Marymount. He was drafted in the 7th round by the San Diego Rockets in the 1968 draft.

He played for 7 seasons for 5 teams amassing 3,579 points, 1,129 rebounds, and 1,606 assists and for his career averaged 7.7 ppg.

Adelman began his coaching career at Chemeketa Community College in Salem, Oregon where he was the head coach for 6 seasons.

NBA Coaching Career

In 1984 he was hired by the Portland Trailblazers to be an assistant coach and held that position until he was the interim head coach when Mike Schuler was fired during the 1988-89 season.

He guided the Blazers to the playoffs in that season and the interim tag was taken off and he became the head coach. In the next 3 seasons, the Blazers were one of the top teams in the league going to the finals twice and the Western Conference finals once.

Northwest Coach Profile: Rick Adelman

He had a great team at that time with the likes of Clyde Drexler and Terry Porter, but lost to the “Bad Boys” of the Pistons in the 1990 finals and Michael Jordon and the Bulls in 1992.

Despite his success in Portland he was let go after the 1993-1994 season and was hired the next season by the Golden State Warriors. In his 2 years there the Warriors were the only team he did not take to the post-season.

In the 1998 season the Sacramento Kings hired him and he enjoyed a lot of success in Sacramento taking them to the post-season every year.

He took the Kings to the Western Conference semifinals 3 times and the Western Conference finals once. The conference finals series in 2002 where the Kings lost to the Lakers 4 games to 3 is regarding as one of the best playoff series ever.

In the 2007 season he was hired by the Houston Rockets and in his 4 years there took them to the playoffs twice.

Before the 2011-2012 season the Minnesota Timberwolves hired Adelman. The T-Wolves are no longer the doormat of the league, as at the All Star break they are at .500 and in the thick of the playoff race.

In The Community

Adelman is known for a well-balanced coaching and up-tempo style and while his teams always rank in the top of the league in scoring he also stresses defense.

He has always shown a commitment to the community, as he is active in charitable organizations as well as in the church.

In 2000 he was given the Gwen VanDenBosch Volunteer of the Year Award by Chemeketa Community College for his fundraising works through his yearly Rick Adelman Golf Classic, which gives scholarships to male and female members of the Chemeketa Community College basketball teams.
