MLS: Timbers Reserves On Fire – 3-3 Tie With L.A.

Timbers: Reserves extend unbeaten streak

With the Portland Timbers off until September 10, now is as good a time as any to check in on the reserves.

The Timbers Reserves kept their unbeaten streak going last Thursday at JELD-WEN Field with a 3-3 draw against the L.A. Galaxy Reserves.

Now 3-0-2 over their last five, the Timbers Reserves extended the streak in thrilling fashion. They trailed 3-1 in the second half before Darlington Nagbe decided he’d had enough.

Jeld-Wen Field

He scored on a header in the 78th minute on a cross from Rodrigo Lopez to cut the deficit in half. Then, he buried a rebound off Brian Perk save to tie the game in the first minute of second-half stoppage time.

Was the attendance mark of 4,882 a far cry from what we’ve grown accustomed to with the MLS version of the Timbers? Sure.

But it doesn’t change the fact that the Reserve League has been a great addition since it arrived in 2005.

The Reserves are special on several different levels. For one, they can seriously help further the development of North American Pro soccer.

The key to the vast superiority of play overseas is that the players and their nations live and breathe soccer from the developmental level and up.

The up-and-comers of MLS will only get better this way.

It’s also just fun to watch your team’s future stars in action, isn’t it? There’s something pure about athletes aspiring to reach a higher level of play. You can see how badly they want it. The Portland Timbers Reserves showed us that feeling first-hand with Nagbe’s inspired performance on September 1.

And, uh, Darlington? First names don’t come cooler than that.

I’m naming my next dog Darlington.

No, my kid.

No, both!
