Real Salt Lake vs. Portland Matchup Insight

The Portland Timbers will host Real Salt Lake at Jeld-Wen Field Saturday night in a key Western Conference matchup that is likely to played on a soggy pitch.

Matchup: Real Salt Lake v Portland Timbers
Date: Saturday, March 30, 2012
Time: Kick-off: 10:00 PM EST
Venue: JELD-WEN Field
Spread: Portland Pick (-130) +140 2.5

Real Salt Lake: Pick (Even) +170

Both sides are coming off unexpected losses and will be adamant to secure a win before the season gets any older.

Real Salt Lake pull into Portland on Saturday on the heels of a 1-0 defeat at home against Chivas USA just seven days ago.

Casey Townsend beat goalkeeper Nick Rimando in front of an open net in the 72nd minute to hand RSL its first defeat of the 2012 season.

And even though RSL dominated play for much of the match — Real had more shots, corner kicks and possession of the ball – one mistake resulted in the loss, quickly erasing the impressive start to the season with wins against Los Angeles and New York.

But to Real’s defense, they have been playing at less than full strength in the first three games.

But defender Nat Borchers could start Saturday in Portland, as well as midfielder Javier Morales and forward Alvaro Saborio.

Meanwhile, the Timbers have started flat in each of their three games this season, and they will need to have a strong start early on in this one.

After last weekend’s humbling loss, the pressure to win is going to be high in front of the Timber Army.

The team let three points slip away in its loss at New England, and another one could be just the beginning of a lousy losing streak.

However, the Timbers are a much different team at home compared to on the road. They have scored three goals at home and one on the road in 2012 and they scored 30 goals at home and 10 on the road in 2011.

But can the energy of Jeld-Wen re-ignite their offense?

I say yes as Portland maintains its unbeaten record against Real Salt Lake.
