MLS Soccer Updates: Portland Timbers
The Timbers, who extended their unbeaten streak to five games, took a 1-0 lead in the ninth minute on a goal by Kenny Cooper but the Quakes responded in the 70th minute to knot the game on Khari Stephenson’s goal from 18 yards.
Portland (10-12-7, 37 points) moved into sole possession of the 10th and final playoff berth– at least for the moment.
With five games remaining in its inaugural season, Portland is one point ahead of New York and two points ahead of DC United. Because they play four of their final five games on the road, the Timbers were hoping for a win. This season, Portland has won nine games at home, but is 1-8-4 on the road.
Though San Jose controlled the first half with its one-touch passing, Portland’s offense created several nice chances, including one for a goal.

The first of Portland’s final four road games is Saturday at New York, the Timbers’ nearest playoff contender.
With little to no breathing room in the hunt for the playoffs, the Timbers know they must get results on the road if they want to extend their season.
Meanwhile, the Red Bulls will be looking to rise from the ashes and erase the memory of a disastrous 3-1 home defeat to Real Salt Lake on Wednesday.
The Red Bulls entered their match against RSL coming off a win over FC Dallas in Frisco, Texas. But whatever momentum generated by that win was squashed inside of 21 minutes as the Real struck for three goals.
The last time the two side met, it ended in 3-3 draw back on June 19 at Portland.
With a sell-out crowd expected at Red Bull Arena, the focus is on three points in any way, shape or form.
No new injuries to report

Timbers in the Community
Recently, Timbers players Adin Brown and Peter Lowry participated in “Sports Buddies”, a program to form one-on-one mentorships with youth all over the Portland area sponsored by the club along with Big Brothers Big Sisters Columbia Northwest.
The program allows kids and teens the opportunity to play on a professional soccer field while learning skills from Timbers players.
The two latest clinics were a huge success as over 30 kids and teens spent an entire a day at JELD-WEN Field , receiving instruction on several different fundamental skills of the game. They also all received an autographed ball from Brown and Lowry, as well a chance to play with their local pros.
Sports Buddies is a new program that brings children and adults in the Portland area together through their love of sports. Other area teams participating in the program are the Portland Trail Blazers, Portland Winterhawks and Portland State Vikings.
