They will get a break though as the Revolution are struggling this season and are in eighth place in the Eastern Conference with an overall record of 5-12-11. They are also atrocious on the road with just one win in 14 games away from Gillette Stadium.

They were coming off a winless streak of seven straight matches before posting their first win since July 20, and second since mid May with a 2-0 victory over FC Dallas on Saturday.

Shalrie Joseph scored his team-leading eighth goal of the season in the 14th minute and Rajko Lekic had a goal late in the second half to give the Revs the win.

New England will be without the services of midfielder Stephen McCarthy who will miss the rest of the Major League Soccer season following left shoulder surgery. He scored two goals and had one assists in 21 games this year. Also out for the visitors is midfielder maestro Sainey Nyassi.

Recent Results

Portland extended its unbeaten streak to three with a scoreless draw against the Philadelphia Union on Saturday, a result that they should be happy with considering the club was just 1-8-3 on the road heading into the contest with seven goals scored.

The Timbers survived an early onslaught from the Union’s attacking lineup that included Freddy Adu, Roger Torres, Sébastien Le Toux, Veljko Paunović and Danny Mwanga. A foursome that had netted four goals just four nights earlier to come back from a 3-0 deficit in a 4-4 tie against the New England Revolution.

Portland’s defense turned in a solid effort, holding the Union to just three shots on goal including a header from defender Carlos Valdes in stoppage time that was saved by Portland goalkeeper Troy Perkins.

Despite spending much of the match on the defensive, the Timbers did get a couple of chances to walk away with three points, including forward Kenny Cooper breaking free on a counter attack in the 85th minute, but couldn’t convert.

Defender David Horst served as an integral part of a Timbers back line and in turn was voted the CenturyLink Man of the Match.

International Round Up

Defender Rodney Wallace returned from a successful stretch with the Costa Rican international team a week after heading in the winning goal in a 1-0 victory over the United States. He came in at the 72nd minute against the Union.

Timbers in the Community

The Timbers helped to open a new field at Chapman Elementary School this past weekend in Northwest Portland. The pristine artificial field was dedicated in the name of late Chapman 5th Grade teacher Steve Brand, who passed away on Christmas Eve from complications brought on by cancer, and will be used by Chapman students for recess and physical education classes, as well as Hillside Soccer Club’s home field.
