As he worked his way up the minor leagues, Neilson would go on to clinch 9 Metro Toronto titles. He earned the President’s Trophy with the Rangers, and made the Stanley Cup Finals with the Canucks in 1982, after replacing Harry Neale.

After shining in the Vancouver Minor Hockey System, he failed to be drafted higher so he played for Nanaimo Clippers of the BC Junior Hockey League. Then onto the University of Minnesota Duluth squad. Garrison played for the Florida Panthers minor league team until he finally got the call.
