The M’s rallied around the King to pick up the get away day matinee at Petco Park. The bats were out in full force as the Mariners hit five homers on the day, but the real story here was rookie Nick Franklin going deep for the 1st and 2nd time in his young career.

Even with strong pitching, the Mariners bats can’t help them win games. The Mariners are now 31-43, seemingly already digging their proverbial grave. The top five hitters had just 2 hits—not including Kyle Seager’s pinch hit double. Edinson Volquez was unsolvable.

Ryan Vogelsong (5-2 2.26 ERA) takes on Jason Vargas (7-5 3.90 ERA) in the series opener. The offensive woes of the Mariners are not likely to get better with this match up. Game 2, Felix Hernandez on the mound. One game he looks dominate, the next he seems to struggle.
