My oh My! Top 10 moments from the 2013 Seattle Mariners season

Seattle Mariners v Cleveland Indians

NWSB Insider and Seattle Mariners blogger Clinton Bell brings us his top ten “My oh My” moments from the 2013 season. From the hot start in spring, to the promise of the future, the M’s had a roller coaster season for sure, again. And now with the need to fill the captain of the ship once again, the M’s may be staying closer to the bottom of the AL West than the top. Hisashi Iwakuma and his stellar play is focused on, as is Tom Wilhelmsen losing his closer role to Danny Farquhar.

NWSB Insider and Seattle Mariners blogger Clinton Bell tells us to him the best “MY oh MY” play of the week had to be Justin Smoaks go-ahead homer against the Los Angeles Angels. Save the best for last, perhaps, was what Smoak was thinking on Sunday. He finally hit his first homer from the right side of the plate! Better late than never, and hopefully this will stop the talk of him abandoning his switch hitting duties.

NWSB Insider and Seattle Mariners blogger Clinton Bell tells us to him the best “MY oh MY” play of the week had to be James Paxton’s masterful start against the St. Louis Cardinals. In just his second start ever, Paxton looked like a seasoned vet going against a team that is in the middle of two post season playoff hunts, the NL Central, and the NL Wild Card. Paxton went 6 innings, giving up no runs on two hits with five k’s and two walks.

NWSB Insider and Seattle Mariners blogger Clinton Bell tells us to him the best “MY oh MY” play of the week had to be the MLB debut made by Taijuan Walker on Friday night against the Houston Astros. Tai shut down the Stros for 5 innings, not giving up an earned run in the process. The M’s got out of there with a 7-1 victory in part of POTW runner up performance by Dustin Ackley. It’s nice to feel good about this team every once in a while isn’t it?

Ken Griffey, Jr. Action

NWSB Insider and Seattle Mariners blogger Clinton Bell tells us to him the best “MY oh MY” play of the week had to be the ceremony of the induction of Ken Griffey Jr. Saturday night against the Milwaukee Brewers. Let’s forget about how bad this team has been lately, and let’s remember the reason we still have a team to root for. Junior, or the Kid, or Griffey. No matter what you call him, he is the epitome of what a ball player should be, and we are all lucky to have been able to call him part of our family.

NWSB Insider and Seattle Mariners blogger Clinton Bell tells us to him the best “MY oh MY” play of the week had to be the two homer day by Michael Saunders against the Baltimore Orioles. The first one gave the Mariners a 4 run lead in the 5th, pretty much securing the lead (well we thought that in Boston too). The second one put the nail in the coffin for the O’s. He ended the day with 5 RBI’s and was an integral part of the teams victory.

Look for Franklin to continue to lead the Mariners in the future.

NWSB Insider and Seattle Mariners blogger Clinton Bell tells us to him the best “MY oh MY” play of the thirteenth week of the year had to be the two homer day by Nick Franklin against the Minnesota Twins. With the first bomb, Franklin put the M’s in the lead. With the second one, he moved into the lead for most HRs by rookie second basemen and overall rookie RBI leader. I think we have found a winner in Franklin at second.

zunino walk off

NWSB Insider and Seattle Mariners blogger Clinton Bell tells us to him the best “MY oh MY” play of the thirteenth week of the year had to be Mike Zunino’s first career home walk off hit. The comeback was set up by an unlikely triple by none other than Raul Ibanez, and finished off with the extra innings, bases loaded walk off hit by the M’s rookie catcher. Oh year, and it was also super stud Brad Miller’s MLB debut to boot. Catch all the highlights from the game here.

NWSB Insider and Seattle Mariners blogger Clinton Bell tells us to him the best “MY oh MY” play of the eleventh week of the year had to be Mike Zunino’s first career home run. Not only did it break the tie against Oakland, but the Mariners went on to win the game, and the next one as well. Missed in this excitement for me was the amazing debut for Henry Blanco too, who hit a grand slam on Saturday for the M’s.

NWSB Insider and Seattle Mariners blogger Clinton Bell tells us to him the best “MY oh MY” play of the tenth week of the year had to be the grand slam by Kyle Seager to tie up the ball game in the bottom of the 14th inning against the Chicago White Sox. After 13 innings of scoreless baseball, the flood gates were opened wide in the 14th. The Sox scored 5 in the top of the inning, only for the Mariners to come back in the most dramatic fashion with Kyle Seager hitting the Salami to tie it.

Nick Franklin

NWSB Insider and Seattle Mariners blogger Clinton Bell tells us to him the best “MY oh MY” play of the ninth week of the year had to be the two homerun game by Nick Franklin against the San Diego Padres. The M’s rallied around the King to pick up the get away day matinee at Petco Park. The bats were out in full force as the Mariners hit five homers on the day, but the real story here was rookie Nick Franklin going deep for the 1st and 2nd time in his young career.

raul ibanez vs. Yankees

NWSB Insider and Seattle Mariners blogger Clinton Bell tells us to him the best “MY oh MY” play of the seventh week of the year had to be the two homerun game by Raul Ibanez against the Yankees. The M’s jumped out of the gate hot Wednesday night, probably a little peeved about the loss the night before. A 7 run first inning capped by a Ibanez grand slam started them off on the right foot. The M’s went on to win 12-2, but not before Raul connected for a 2-run shot in the 5th as well.
