After putting together a series of impressive performances without being rewarded with a victory, the Timbers edged the Whitecaps 2-1 in front of an outstanding crowd a JELD-WEN field. Portland took the lead in the 41st minute on a goal by Darlington Nagbe. Kenny Miller equaled for the Whitecaps. Franck Songo’o won it.

Both Danny Mwanga and Jack Jewsbury scored their first goals for Portland this MLS season while a strong defensive effort through the first half and part of the second half gave the Timbers the cushion to win the game.

Despite winning their first game of the season over the Philadelphia Union 3-1, the Timbers would only scratch out two more victories in between their opener and June 17, leaving them in last place and wondering where so much promise for a young and talented team went.
