MLS Boxscore: Real Salt Lake 2, Seattle 1
September 10, 2011
Qwest Field, Seattle
Referee: Mark Geiger
In their last match the Sounders lost to Real Salt Lake on Sept 10th and while they are still in a good position to make the playoffs they really blew a chance to pad their cushion in the Western Conference standings.
I say blew a chance, as Seattle only lost by 1 goal and in the match they missed a penalty shot and reliable Kasey Keller made an error that led to an own goal.
First the sure handed Keller was anything but on a pass from the far post, as he looked to have control, but he didn’t and after mishandling it the ball went in the new giving Real a 1-0 lead in the 13th minute.
Keller said he was just trying to bat the ball away, but he did not accomplish that to say the least.
One key that may hurt the Sounders if and when they make the playoffs is their penalty shots. In the Real match Seattle’s Mauro Rosales could have knotted the score at a goal apiece, but his penalty shot was far left.
Seattle has not converted in 3 of their last 8 penalty shots and those are free goals that have to be made, especially when the post-season comes around.
Real’s Alvaro Saborío passed Keller with a shot in the 56th minute from 10 yards out to give the visiting a team the lead, which would stick.
The sounders’ offense came out in this home match a bit sluggish, as they only had 4 shots on target (9 shots on goal total) and could not take advantage of the fact that they had 11 corner kicks while Real only had 2.
Still, with only 6 matches remaining in the regular season Seattle is in good position to make the post-season with the 2nd most points in the Western Conference 7 points behind L.A. and 2 points clear of Dallas, 3 points clear of Salt Lake, and 7 points clear of Colorado.
You heard it here the Sounders will make the playoff, not a shocking prediction with where they are in the table, but to go far in the post-season they cannot make gaffes like they did in losing to Real Salt Lake.
