Sounders FC vs. LA Galaxy playoff blog: love ‘em & hate ‘em

Sounders 0 – 3 Galaxy

Not the start to the conference finals series that we expected, eh?

In fact it was a terrible showing on the Sounders part Sunday night.

I am not sure if Sigi Schmid was banking on another blow out victory over the Galaxy at home next week, but he sure screwed the pooch with his starting eleven tonight.

The Sounders went with only one forward, Freddy Montero, in a 4-5-1 formation.

Mario Martinez did end up getting the start once again for the Sounders, but in a different spot on the field, he was in the right wing slot, with Alex Caskey on the left side, and Cristian Tiffert in a central mid field role.

If it’s not broke, don’t fix it!

But Sigi decided to change everything around anyways, and the result was hardly any scoring chances, while getting beat on defense with ease.

Love ‘em

Defense

No, that was not a typo, I really think the defenders did an excellent job tonight, especially Zach Scott, and Jeff Parke, who came up huge in saving the score line from spiraling out of control.

There was not much any of them could have done on the first goal, but Michael Gspurning did almost get to it with his foot.

The intricate passing inside the box, and the perfectly timed runs by the Galaxy were just too much for the Sounders to handle tonight.

The 3-0 scoreline doesn’t even come close to telling the tale of how good the Galaxy looked, or more importantly, how bad the Sounders looked.

Hate ‘em

Where’s your head Sigi?

I can’t even put words onto this screen to justify what Sigi Schmid might have been thinking about before kickoff tonight.

And even at halftime, when going into the break down a goal, and after seeing Montero not get a single scoring chance, why didn’t he put Eddie Johnson in, and move back to the 4-4-2?

Once Johnson finally did come in, we were down 2-0, and he was subbed in for Freddy Montero.

What this did to help the team is beyond me. We had no scoring chances with one forward, so let’s sub him, and put only one more back in the game.

Stupid! This was just plain stupid! We didn’t get this far by playing only one forward, why would we be able to pull a win out starting in the conference finals?

Yes Mauro Rosales was still out, but with both Montero and Johnson up front, Martinez, or Caskey, or Tiffert, or Adam Johansson would still have some targets to aim for.

But with only one forward, this doesn’t work. Especially when the mids can’t get up the field fast enough to get in the box for attack.

This has to be changed by Sunday. We cannot win games like this.

Let’s hope to God that Rosales can come back next week, and we can go for the 4-0 win again like last time LA came to town.
