CONCACAF Champions League Group D Match
September 21, 2011
Qwest Field, Seattle
The Sounders looked like they were just going through the motions in the match until they rallied late when Fredy Montero, Osvaldo Alonso and Sammy Ochoa all came in as substitutes in the 2nd half, but couldn’t find the back of the net.
Both teams had a great chance to open up the scoring early in the game when Herediano’s Jorge Barbosa hit the post as Seattle G Kasey Keller charged and the Sounders had a close shot on goal, but Nate Jaqua slid the ball just past the post.
In the 25th minute Herediano’s Arias had a free kick from 25 yards out and he struck it perfectly beating Keller on the near post to give the visitors a 1-0 lead.
Herediano dominated the ball in the 1st half winning the time of possession battle 55% to 45% and Seattle only had one shot on goal. In the 2nd half the subs came in and gave the Sounders some life and in reality only 1 real starter begun the game for the home squad since they are in control of the group.
Herediano G Daniel Cambronero, who made 4 saves in the match, made a stellar diving stop on Sammy Ochoa’s shot to preserve the 1-0 win.
Next Up: The Sounders face Comunicaciones in Guatemala on September 27th before finishing the group stage at home against Monterrey on October 18th. Their next MLS match is Saturday September 24th facing Vancouver on the road.
Speaking of the MLS they are well on the road to the playoffs and ESPN has them as the #2 ranked team in their MLS Power Rankings.
