Sounders 2 – 1 Rapids
What a welcome back from the All-Star break for the Seattle Sounders.
Though he gave up the equalizing goal on his first shot just a minute plus after the Sounders opened the scoring in the 2nd minute of play, he did find his nerves, and finished the game superbly.
Two goals in the first 4 minutes of a game is almost unheard of, yet, that is what happened Saturday night at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park.
Eddie Johnson is becoming as reliable as a Larry Fitzgerald or a Randy Moss in his prime. Just get the ball air born in the box, and he will go up and get it.
His headers are becoming the stuff that legends are made of, and is making the possible transfer of Freddy Montero to Europe, that much easier to accept for Sounders fans.
Get the ball on net.
That is the thing that every coach tells his players from the earliest of ages. Good things happen when the ball is put on net.
Even better things happen when the ball goes out for a corner.
2 minutes into the game, and on Seattle’s first corner, Colorado let Eddie Johnson go unmarked on Mauro Rosales‘ delivery, and he nailed it home with his head for a very quick 1-0 lead for the Sounders.
Ozzie Ozzie Ozzie, Oi Oi Oi
A beautiful volley, some well timed tackles, and the man who keeps it all together in the midfield for the Sounders.
Not that either of them are rumored to leave now that Alvaro Fernandez has been traded, but it’s a scary “what if” game to play.
Alonso is the glue that holds the defence together, and Rosales is the man that the offense goes through.
I guess if there’s no reason to worry, there’s no reason for the question, but that still doesn’t stop me from wondering.
Just as the Rapids were caught off guard on the Sounders early goal, the Sounders were guilty of the same mishap on defense as well.
Nothing deflates the sails like giving up an equalizing tally just minutes after taking a lead.
Pace of game
From the 5th minute, until after the hour mark, both teams seemed like they were afraid of conceding another goal.
Neither team wanted to take a real chance on net. Sure the Rapids were shooting the ball on net, but most were well outside of the penalty area.
Sounders controlled the ball fairly well, but without many scoring chances, ball control isn’t all that important. Yes it keeps the opposing team from chances, but midfield play is just not very exciting to watch.
Michael Gspurning was very impressive in his first game back in several months. The defense was a big help, especially in set pieces, where they have been shaky at best of late.
No offense to Bryan Meredith, or Andrew Weber, but Gspurning is the man that will take us up the standings and into the playoffs.
Next league match for the Sounders is L.A. Galaxy home on Sunday August 5th. Game time is 7:00 PM, and can be seen locally on KONG.
