MLS Matchup Report: San Jose Earthquakes vs. Seattle Sounders

Seattle vs San Jose Matchup Insight

This match is the first Western Conference one for each team and features a couple of the MLS top scorers in David Estrada and Chris Wondolowski. This may be a high scoring affair since these 2 teams combined for 7 goals in their 2 matches last season.

Estrada and Wondolowski, have combined for 7 goals in 5 matches this season including 2 for Wondolowski and 1 for Estrada, as each club won in their last match and the goal gave Estrada the most goals so far in the young MLS season with 4.

So far this season San Jose has beaten New England and Toronto and lost to Houston and Seattle has won both its matches so far facing Toronto and Houston.

Both of the Seattle Sounders matches have been at home and they get off to a great 3-0 start in front of their rabid crowd with a win on Saturday night.

The Earthquakes’ defense must key on Wondolowski, but Sam Cronin had 2 assists in the Sounders last match and he has played so far this season. I have to say Seattle has the better midfield play and they have to take advantage of that fact.

New Seattle G Michael Gspurning is winning over fans with his solid play and in his first 2 MLS matches he has only given up 1 goal and had a clean sheet in the 2-0 over Houston in the Sounders’ last match.

Look for him to get some action in this match facing a San Jose squad that scored 3 goals in their last match.

San Jose vs. Seattle FC

The Sounders look to get off to a great 3-0 start in front of their crowd Saturday.

If the Seattle defense can bottle up Chris Wondolowski they should be in good shape, but that is a tall task. The Earthquakes are dangerous and take advantage of their chances, as in their 3-0 win over Toronto in their last match they had fewer shots and lost the time of possession battle 61% to 39% and still won convincingly.

Seattle must keep their composure against an aggressive San Jose squad that had 16 fouls in their last match facing Toronto.

The Sounders must also be aggressive in this match, but they will face a San Jose defense that has only conceded 2 goals in their 3 matches.

Seattle must be wary of the San Jose counter-attack.

Injury Update Sounders:

OUT: GK Josh Ford, DF Andrew Duran, DF Michael Tetteh, MF Mauro Rosales, and MF Steve Zakuani (leg fracture).
DOUBTFUL: FW Eddie Johnson
QUESTIONABLE: DF Adam Johansson

Injury Update Earthquakes:

OUT: MF Joey Gjertsen, DF Tim Ward
DOUBTFUL: MF Sercan Guvenisik
QUESTIONABLE: MF Marvin Chavez

San Jose Recent Form

Mar 10 San Jose 1 New England     0
Mar 17 San Jose 0 Houston 1
Mar 24 Toronto FC 0 San Jose 3

Seattle Recent Form

Mar 17 Seattle Sounders 3 Toronto FC 1
Mar 23 Seattle Sounders 2 Houston 0

Pick: I think both teams will come out and play well, but with Seattle at home and their D playing well I think they will come out on top in this match and move to 3-0 on the season.
