Seattle Sounders FC PreSeason Update
Gaining wins against the Columbus Crew, the USNT U-17 team, Florida Gulf Coast University, and Atlante (Mexico), as well as draws against their Cascadia Cup rival Vancouver Whitecaps, and possible future MLS expansion team Orlando City (USL), the Sounders looked like the team of old this pre-season, despite many new faces.
Johnson, a former USNT member, has also played in England, Greece, and Mexico, as well as starting off his pro career in the MLS. Once a very promising striker in the football world, Johnson has failed to show his scoring touch since leaving the MLS in 2008.
Manager Sigi Schmid has spoke proudly about his newly acquired striker, saying that his feet are as quick as any he’s ever seen before.
It will be interesting to see how Johnson does playing up front along side Fredy Montero. It will be also interesting to see if the Sounders go toward a more traditional 4-4-2 structure now that there are two very capable scorers up front.
Schmid has depth
With the edition of Eddie Johnson, Sigi Schmid has a lot of free movement at the forward position this season. A healthy O’Brian White will give the coach an added boost from the bench this season.
As well as at the forward position, coach Schmid also has a ton of weapons at the mid-field positions as well. The player I am looking forward to having back the most this season is the lightning fast Steve Zakuani though. I am still cringing over the video replay of his broken leg.
Zakuani, armed with the ball on the wings is one of the most dangerous players in the league. His speed creates havoc for the opposing defenses, and he is a weapon the Sounders most definitely need back this season if they are wanting to go out and capture their first MLS Cup this season.
As usual, the L.A. Galaxy are the favorites for the MLS Cup going in to the season this year. The Sounders have a ton of talent, and if they can gel together, they can maybe make a push in the playoffs this season and finally get over the hump.
More games means unknown results for Sounders FC
With the expansion Montreal Impact coming into the league this year, along with the Sounders making it to the knockout stage of the CONCACAF Champions League for the first time, added games will be an issue for the teams fitness this season.
This is where Sigi Schmid will be thankful for all that extra talent he has on his bench this season.
If they can all stay healthy that is.
