Sounders: What’s the secret behind Seattle’s amazing month?
I think it’s safe to say the Seattle Sounders are in uncharted territory as far as MLS expansion teams go.
The month of August was positively awesome for Seattle. The squad flirted with perfection, going 7-0-1. The only blemish was a draw against Chivas USA on August 13 – one that could’ve been a Sounders win had Alvaro Fernandez scored on his penalty kick.
Other than that draw, everything came up roses for the Sounders in August. They outscored their opponents, including Monterrey and FC Dallas (twice), by a 17-3 margin.
The amazing month has vaulted them into second place behind the LA Galaxy in the Western conference and second overall in the 18-team MLS with 48 points.
This effort comes on the heels of playoff berths in each of the Sounders’ first two MLS seasons and back-to-back U.S. Open Cups. Yep, expanding soccer in Seattle was a good idea.
What’s the secret behind the team’s torrid play of late? The players credit their skipper, Sigi Schmid.
He’s made some very creative and bold roster decisions during the streak – most notably sending five players home, including goalkeeper Kasey Keller, instead of bringing them on a road trip to Monterrey.
“Great credit to the guys, making some changes and having the confidence in the squad to be able to send five of us home and go down to Monterrey and get an historic win down there,” Keller said.
“The team is full of confidence…but right now it’s about keeping this form going into the playoffs.”
The time for modesty is over, Sounders fans. Our boys are major MLS title contenders and it’s time to start “expecting” dominance.
They’ve earned that status!
