MLS Matchup Report: Seattle Sounders FC vs. Colorado Rapids

Colorado vs. Seattle Matchup Insight

The Seattle Sounders had a good start of the season winning their first 2 games, but since then they have a loss and a draw in their last 2 matches and they sit in the middle of the table in the Western Conference. Colorado sits in 3rd place in the West and they were shut out in their last match.

In their last matches the Rapids were on the road and lost to Real Salt Lake 2-0 and the Sounders were also on the road and played to a 0-0 draw against DC United.

The Seattle defense was a question mark heading into the season since they lost 2 starting defenders and goalie Kasey Keller, but so far this season their defense has been their saving grace, as they have only given up 2 goals this season. However, their offense has not been in sync since they have only scored 5 goals in 4 matches.

Colorado is in 3rd place in the West and they have been really up and down this season with 3 wins and 2 losses and in their 5 matches they have scored 7 goals and given up 7.

Last season the Sounders swept the 2 game series and in Seattle the game was a barnburner in a 4-3 win for the Sounders.

It is no secret what the goal of the Colorado defense is, as they have to bottle up David Estrada, whop has 4 of the Sounders 5 goals this season. Since the Rapids will key on him some other players have to step up and pressure the Colorado defense.

Seattle G Michael Gspurning has been great so far this season and while he has a long way to go to replace Keller after each match it looks as if the Sounders made a good call bringing him over from the other side of the pond.

While Seattle has a one sided offense with Estrada this season the same cannot be said about the Rapids, as Omar Cummings is the leading scorer with 2 goals and 5 other players with 1 goal apiece.

We all know that Seattle has the best, and most rabid, fan base in the MLS and in their last matches on the road the Rapids have lost both and given up 6 goals and only scored 1.

One player the Sounders have to keep tabs on is MF Jeff Larentowicz, who has a knack of scoring big goals and he is one of the best passers in the league. Seattle cannot give him time to operate in the midfield.

Seattle Recent Form

Mar 23 Seattle Sounders 2 Houston 0
Mar 31 Seattle Sounders 0 San Jose 1
Apr 7 DC United 0 Seattle Sounders 0

Colorado Recent Form

Mar 25 New York Red Bulls 4 Colorado 1
Apr 1 Colorado 2 Chicago 0
Apr 7 Real Salt Lake 2 Colorado 0

Pick: The Rapids have not played well in their last 2 road matches and I think that will continue in this match. The Sounders’ offense will step up in this match and their defense will continue to play well and I think they will win this match up on their home turf on Saturday.
