2012 MLS Playoff preview: Sounders FC vs. LA Galaxy

Round two here we come

The Seattle Sounders Football Club is entering uncharted territory for the first time in their MLS existence; the second round of the MLS Cup playoffs.

Matchup: Seattle vs. LA
Venue: The Home Depot Center
Time: 6:00 (local)
Date: November 11th, 2012

The Sounders have owned the Galaxy this year, with their only loss coming in the final game of the regular season, thanks in part to excellent goal keeping by Galaxy keeper Josh Saunders.

The Sounders have momentum on their side with the goal that finally lifted them over the hump on Thursday night.

But, the Galaxy just defeated the best team in the MLS this year, so they have quite a bit of momentum coming into this one as well.

If the Sounders keep up the offensive intensity that they displayed in the two legs against Real Salt Lake, they should be just fine in this series.

They only allowed one goal in three matches against the Galaxy this year, so it was quite a different season series than the one they faced against RSL.

What to watch: Seattle

Biggest question coming into Sunday’s game is; will Mario Martinez get another start for the Rave Green.

The lineup in Thursdays match didn’t give the same offensive pressure that the team in the first game did, but I liked what Sigi Schmid did with the addition of Martinez on the left wing.

This opened up the move for Brad Evans to get back to the center mid position he seems to be more comfortable at.

Christian Tiffert was a nice addition to the right wing side with the absence of Mauro Rosales, but without Rosales in, the Sounders had a harder time creating as many chances as they did in the first leg.

All eyes will be on the lineup that Schmid rolls out on Sunday evening.

With the first game away, this gives the Sounders the chance to finish up at home, but Sunday’s game will need to be game with a goal, just to keep the pressure off of Michael Gspurning in the 2nd leg.

What to watch: LA

Which LA team are we going to be facing, the team we destroyed in the first two matches, or the one that kept us off of the score sheet in the final regular season game, and then dismissed San Jose from the playoffs.

My guess is the second one.

LA knows how to win in the playoffs, and the big three of Landon Donovan, David Beckham, and Robby Keane know how to play the game under the spotlight.

With all three of them playing on footballs greatest club stage, the English Premier League, they know how to seal the deal when need be.

It was ironic that it took a sub to beat us in the last match against the Galaxy, one in which all three of the DP’s were playing in.

But that is the scary thing about LA, they have so many offensive weapons at their disposal. More so than the Sounders do.

So here we are, in the second round. Let’s get the win on Sunday and finish this thing off at home!
