State Of The Sounders: Weekly Notebook | October 22nd

MLS Soccer: Sounders

The Sounders are ready to begin the playoffs after their last regular season match on Saturday and they have a legit chance to win their first MLS title.

In ESPN’s power rankings, which you can read here, the Sounders are ranked 2nd, but the team ahead of them is the L.A. Galaxy, who are also in the Western Conference and beat the Sounders 1-0 in Seattle in the season opener and then played to a 0-0 draw in La La Land on July 4th.

Upcoming Match

The Sounders will play their last regular season match against Chivas USA on Saturday the 22nd and they are hoping the match will be a tune up for the upcoming playoffs. Seattle is assured of 2nd place in the Western Conference while Chivas USA will not make the playoffs. When these 2 teams met early in the season in Seattle the match ended a scoreless draw. In an interesting fact the home team has never lost in this match up.

Recent Results

In their last match the Sounders lost to Monterrey 2-1 on October 18th in the first CONCACAF Champions League and in their last MLS match Seattle gave soon-to-be-retired goalie Kasey Keller a great farewell by beating San Jose 2-1 on the 15th.

Trades and Rumors

Sounders in the Community

James Riley was named Sounders FC Humanitarian of the Year for the 2nd straight season and there is no disputing what he has done in the Seattle community in terms of humanitarian efforts.

Since Riley joined the Sounders in 2009 he has worked in the community in the organizations of the Renton/Skyway Boys & Girls Club, Special Olympics, the Make-A-Wish Foundation, America SCORES Seattle and Susan G. Komen for the Cure, as well with others.

Riley will go up against the winners from the other clubs in the MLS for a league humanitarian award and that winner will be awarded later this season.
