Seattle Redhawks Thru the Years

The Seattle Redhawks first made a major name for themselves, believe it or not, in an exhibition game. Then known as the Chieftains, they stunned the Harlem Globetrotters 84-81 in January of 1952. Johnny O’Brien led the charge.

There was no more dominant era of basketball in Redhawks history than the 1950s and 1960s. From 1953 to 1967, they reached the NCAA Tournament 11 times.

Basketball Hall-of-Famer Elgin Baylor led Seattle to the national championship game in 1958, where it lost to Kentucky.

Baylor left Seattle after that loss to become the NBA’s first overall pick with the Minneapolis Lakers.

Among the other memorable Redhawks players: Clint Richardson, Plummer Lott, Eddie Miles, and many more.

The Redhawks left Division I in 1980 but returned to the big leagues in 2009.

They’re currently an independent;

In 2012, they’ll move to the Western Athletic Conference. Life has been tough for Seattle of late; it posted an 11-20 record in 2010-11.

However, someday, the Redhawks will return to the glory days of the 1950s.

Elgin Baylor took them to within one game of a national title; who will be the next great Seattle U star to get them back there?
