Things to look for in tonight’s Preseason Week 2 Seahawks vs Broncos tilt

Seattle’s most important game of the preseason

The Seattle Seahawks play their second game of the preseason tonight against the Denver Broncos, hoping to find answers to some very important questions.  Where the week one game against the San Diego Chargers was more about getting back into game-time routines, tonight’s game will be all about position battles.

Let’s take a look at the top 3.

QB2

The backup quarterback battle continues this week as Tarvaris Jackson and Brady Quinn look to impress.  Jackson had the near perfect stat line last week, but against the Chargers 3rd and 4th stringers, while Quinn was quietly efficient against the 2’s and 3’s.  Will Pete Carroll switch it up this week?  I believe so.

While coaches never coach for the fans, Jackson’s locker room equity and similar skill-set to Russell Wilson has everyone wondering if he can be a capable backup.  However, I suggest not sleeping on Quinn, because he won’t be going quietly into the night.

With Wilson likely seeing more game-time in preseason week 3 and the Broncos defense being deeper than that of the Chargers, tonight’s results will have the biggest impact on the QB2 battle.

Pay close attention, because barring injury, whichever quarterback wins tonight’s stat line will be the backup week one against the Carolina Panthers.

RB/FB

Last year the Seahawks went with Marshawn Lynch, Robert Turbin, and Leon Washington at running back, Michael Robinson in the fullback role and stashed Derrick Coleman on the practice squad. (End of the year)

Washington is gone, but the team drafted both Christine Michael and Spencer Ware, creating a logjam at the position.

In preseason week one, Michael stepped up and rushed for 89 yards on 16 carries while Turbin sat out.  This week the roles may be reversed as Michael has been dealing with back spasms.

I don’t think Turbin’s role as RB2 is in any jeopardy, but the same cannot be said for Robinson at FB.

If Ware continues his progression and the Seahawks once again only go with four backs, Robinson may find himself the odd man out.

There is no way the team will give up on their rookie backs, and Ware may be too good to stash away on the practice squad, so tonight’s game will go a long way in deciding Robinson’s future.

Defensive Front

The Seahawks have a ton of bodies in camp on the defensive line, but also a ton of questions.  With Cliff Avril and Tony McDaniel nursing injuries, Bruce Irvin seeing time at OLB and awaiting his 4-game suspension for PEDs, and Chris Clemons recovering from last year’s season-ending knee injury, there are some open slots for younger players to make some noise.

Avril should be fine, but fans seem to forget about Michael Bennett’s torn rotator cuff.  So far, the team has not been worried, but there is a risk that the injury will require attention during the season.  The Seahawks are going to need continued growth and progression from Benson Mayowa.

At tackle, the team would like to see either Jessie Williams or Jordan Hill earn a spot.  So look for all three players to get a lot of game time tonight.

With the starters traditionally playing deep in the preseason’s 3rd game, and the 4th game being used to decide final cuts, the second game of the preseason is critical for deciding immediate depth behind starters.

There are very few starter positions undecided, and while important, the back-end of a roster rarely makes an impact.

So for Seahawk fans, tonight’s game versus the Broncos is the most important of the preseason.

Watch closely, because a lot will be decided.
