seahawks

Here’s what I’m watching for Saturday night at Century Link

Titans Seahawks Storylines

Saturday’s Seahawks game against the Titans has as many story lines as I can remember a pre-season game in Seattle having.

I’m always glued to position battles between Seahawks players but on Saturday I’ll be just as tuned in to the battle between former Seahawks quarterback Matt Hasselbeck and former University of Washington quarterback Jake Locker.

Of course that’s not the only quarterback battle to watch, the Seahawks are having a “Battle” of their own.

I use battle loosely because I honestly believe the Matt Flynn was brought in to be the Seahawks starting quarterback in 2012 and it’s his job to lose.

Sure they drafted Russell Wilson and they already had Tarvaris Jackson and Josh Portis on the roster but I believe they are fighting for the two back-up jobs unless Flynn flops.

In a conversation I had with Head Coach Pete Carroll a month or so ago he left Jackson’s name out of the mix while he was talking about how the group looked in OTA’s.

Saturday I want to see Matt Flynn reading the field and being decisive. I don’t care what his stats are at the end of his half.

I expect him to have some timing issues and miss communications at this point due to limited reps in practice with his new team but playing a vanilla defense in the first preseason game he should be able to make good decisions out there.

Jason Jones

Tonight I want to see free agent acquisition Jason Jones step up.

In the second half Russell Wilson will get the ball and to be honest I just want to see him play and don’t have any expectations at this point.

Going into the 2012 NFL draft my ideal pick for the Seahawks at number 12 would have been Melvin Ingram but I assumed he would already be drafted by the time the Seahawks were on the clock.

To my delight Ingram was still on the board and when Seattle selected but they chose Bruce Irvin and I was flabbergasted.

On Thursday Ingram was all over the field, he had a QB pressure, 2 QB hit including one on Aaron Rodgers that led him to throw an interception and then he went down the field and leveled a would-be tackler. On Saturday I want to see Bruce Irvin be a disruptive force.

He impressed me with his power in training camp practice but I want to see it translate to the game.

Speaking of disruption I want to see pressure from the middle of the Seahawks defensive line. That means I want to see free agent acquisition Jason Jones step up and show what he can do.

With starting right guard John Moffitt out for 2-3 weeks with debris in his left elbow newly acquired Deuce Lutui will get to start in his place and I want to see his conditioning.

He has always struggled with his weight and even has a weight clause in his contract that allows the Seahawks to cut ties with him if he gains too much.

He looked good in training camp, I was actually very surprised to see how lean he was looking.

Enjoy the game fellow 12’s, and let’s hope nobody gets injured to seriously. We need all our troops at full health to take a run at the NFC west title in 2012.
