Part 2: Seahawks 2013 roster predictions + cuts on defense

Defense- 25

Yesterday I broke down my Seahawks projections for the offensive side of the football.  In today’s piece I will be posting my projections for the defense.

Defensive end (5)

The big story here is that Benson Mayowa has played so well the team can not cut him at this point.  I expect him to get some playing time early in the season with Cliff Avril and Chris Clemons hampered by injuries.

Cliff Avrill will make a big impact this year along the defensive line.

When those two are healthy I wouldn’t be surprised to see the Seahawks part ways with Benson, but for now it is a great story.

Defensive tackle (5)

You may notice that my roster reflects an overhaul at defensive tackle as I have cut two key cogs in from last years team.  Jaye Howard and Clinton McDonald join Dewayne Cherrington in the unemployment line.

Linebacker (5)

A familiar name will be cut at linebacker.  Allen Bradford‘s great play has made Heath Farwell expendable.

John Lotulelei has a skill set that can’t be taught.  That said, he needs to be taught how to control his speed and aggression.  John finds himself near the football but far too often he either over runs the play or misses a tackle.

Lotulelei is a prime candidate for the practice squad.

Guess What. They’re all on the team!

Ty Powell may be cut but I fully expect to see him on the practice squad.

Cornerback (6)

I am writing this saturday morning instead of Friday because I was unable to get out of the hospital yesterday until early this morning.  I point that out because Jason LaCanfora has reported that he has heard reports that the Seahawks are releasing Antoine Winfield.

I’m not going to change my roster, it wouldn’t be right to, but I want to address the issue.  If Jason is correct I expect the team to keep an extra safety or defensive tackle and five cornerbacks.

That means no matter what happens to Winfield I expect Ron Parker and DeShawn Shead to be among those players cut.

Safety (4)

Winston Guy has been locked in a position battle with Jeron Johnson all preseason. Winston is more physically gifted than Jeron, however his lack of consistency will hand the job to Johnson.

As I stated above, if the Seahawks do release Antoine they could keep Winston Guy.

Go Seahawks!
