Could this finally be the Seahawks year?

Turning the corner

The Pacific Northwest has been abuzz when it comes to the Seattle Seahawks. After a pretty successful 2012, the phrase “Championship Offseason” has been thrown around…a lot. And why not? With players believing the new mantra as well as the fans jumping on board from day one, it finally feels real.

One can’t help but wonder, though, if this is going to be another big build up followed by the obligatory feeling of disappointment Seattle fans are all too used to.

Despite the playoff run last season, despite the promise of this young and talented team and despite the change of demeanor, things COULD go awry.

Of course, I sure hope this isn’t the case. Either way, an argument could be made for both points of view.

Let’s take a look at both sides of the Year of the Hawk debate.

The Pros

Youth

Having a young team can really be a blessing for a franchise looking to turn things around for the long haul. With youth comes longevity, and if this front office can hold onto the young talent on this team, they will have a contender on their hands for years to come.

Could injuries sink title hopes? Or will youth and depth prevail?

Talent

This Seahawks team is laden with talent. Holding some of the top names at several positions, PCJS has put together quite a team. With names like Russell Wilson, Marshawn Lynch and the Legion of Boom – Brandon Browner, Richard Sherman, Earl Thomas and Kam Chancellor – this team is going to be a menace to opponents.

Oh yeah, don’t forget the new guy on the block, Percy Harvin.

Depth

With Pete Carroll’s “Always Compete” mantra, this depth chart has gotten deeper and deeper over the last couple years. It is truly a tough test for any player to make this team, whether they’re a rookie or a seasoned vet. This depth adds an extra dimension that likely will make the difference in some games.

When your second string is as good as a percentage of starting lineups in the NFL, you know you have it good.

The Cons

Youth

Youth can be a blessing, but it can also be a disadvantage at times. With youth comes inexperience and less discipline. While the Seahawks didn’t see much in this department last season, there are plenty of young guys on this team that are new to the whole process.

Whether it’s decision making, route running, or shoving a guy back during an argument, youth CAN be detrimental.

Injuries

This one strikes the hardest right now with the debate beginning about the fate of new Seahawk Percy Harvin. Between him and Sidney Rice, there are plenty of injury issues to worry about. Throw in Marshawn Lynch‘s back spasms and Doug Baldwin‘s off and on issues and you have a case to be made for a potential scare.

While I’m not one bit worried about the injuries on the team, it should not go unnoticed and should be taken pretty seriously. Especially when some key guys are constantly on an injury watch list.

Off Field Issues

This is where it gets sensitive. Seattle has been in the news quite a bit the last couple years with off field issues. Whether it be from a random arrest, a DUI or suspension for substance abuse, this team has been there. While these issues seem to be getting worked out behind closed doors, they CAN become a serious issue.

Let’s just hope they took that team meeting to heart.
