Seattle Seahawks pre-season notes: Training Camp day 11

Save The Date: Seahawks vs. Cardinals

The Countdown Is On – Game 1 Is In 34 Days – September 9th, 2012
1:25PM PT – University of Phoenix Stadium

Matt Flynn was announced as the starter for this Saturday’s preseason opener against Matt Hasselbeck, Jake Locker, and the Tennessee Titans on Tuesday.  Today’s Seattle Seahawks practice was his second in a row working with the first team offense.

More offseason controversy for the Seahawks, as they acknowledged after practice today that they broke a rule in the CBA, as newcomer Terrell Owens was in gear Wednesday, when it actuality he should have been in shells until Thursday.

Speaking of Owens, he and Marshawn Lynch were having a lot of fun during stretches, good to see him fitting in.

Sidney Rice

Rice participated in team drills for the first time

Justin Forsett gone and T.O. and Kellen Winslow in, is concerning for me in regards to Lynch due to his past, but that’s over thinking things.

Sidney Rice participated in team drills for the first time today, coming off of double shoulder surgery and a season ended short by concussions.

Doug Baldwin was out again today, but was in shorts and doing light route running.  He also sent out this tweet yesterday in regards to his participation in practice:

Terrell Owens also had an excellent catch in the back off the end zone, almost effortlessly tipping it to himself and getting his toes in bounds.  The play drew a ton of applause from the additional fans to see him.

Rookie J.R. Sweezy has looked excellent in his transition from defensive tackle to offensive guard.  Tom Cable cannot be praised enough for his work with this rookie.

He looks to have a natural talent but is very rough, if Seattle can make it through another offseason without losing Cable to a head coaching gig, Sweezy could be a starter within a few seasons.

Brandon Browner didn’t practice either today, for an undisclosed reason.  He didn’t seem to suffer any injury in previous practices, so it shouldn’t be anything serious.

Phillip Adams, a three year veteran, took Browner’s spot in the starting lineup in drills across from Richard Sherman.  It was a curious decision by the staff, but he didn’t look out of place in drills.

Clinton McDonald has been getting work with the starters in nickel packages, alongside Jason Jones in the middle and Chris Clemons and Bruce Irvin on the outside.

Brandon Browner, Seattle Seahawks

Brandon Browner didn’t practice today for an undisclosed reason.

Rookie Jaye Howard and starter Brandon Mebane looks to be in the hunt for that position as well.

Quarterback Competition

Matt Flynn fit right in with the number one offense, and if he continues his progress through August into the regular season, he is going to make Pete Carroll and co. look very good.

His awareness in the pocket is light-years ahead of Tarvaris Jackson, and that is something that frustrated fans and coaching to no end last season.

Russell Wilson looked sharp again today, and has been consistent all through the camp.  He has made his rookie mistakes, but had two near perfect balls today.

Vision seems to not be a problem at all in the pocket.

Tarvaris Jackson will not play at all in Saturday’s preseason opener, with Carroll stating that they know what they have in Jackson.

What They’re Saying

Bruce Irvin On Game 1 vs. Tennessee:

“Not nervous. This is what I was born to do. Gonna run around and make plays. Get after QB”.

Matt Flynn on the Green Bay Packers system:

“I’ve learned a lot. One of the best systems for QB’s. Clemons and McCarthy are great coaches at preparing us”.

Marcus Trufant on T.O.:

“He’s a pro all the way. He’s been quiet, under the radar, trying to feel out the scheme, guys, team, he’s been really cool”.
