But San Francisco, on the heels of an uber-impressive 20-3 win over the Pittsburgh Steelers have a chance to gain a top two seed in the NFC.

The Hawks have won three straight games and five of six and although they need some help but a Wild card position is still within their grasp.

San Francisco has ridden a stout defense and an occasional big play to an impressive yet improbable 11-3 record this season. The passing game is 29th in the NFL and the running game is 9th.

Alex Smith has not exactly been stellar but he has done a great job of taking care of the ball and limiting mistakes – Michael Crabtree and Vernon Davis have offered their pivot quality targets. Frank Gore and the running game have done the majority of damage for the 49ers on offense – stop Gore and possibility of success against San Francisco grows immensely.

The Seattle Seahawks will find out how good the 49ers defense really is on Saturday – something that the rest of the league already knows.

This unit has not allowed a 100 yard rusher in 10 games and has not allowed a touchdown on the ground all year! The 49ers are the best run defense in the NFL (71.50 yards per game) and the number one scoring defense (just 13.21 points allowed per game).

The Pass Is Key

The way to beat them is through the air – they are 21st against the pass, although they did a good job against Ben Roethlisberger last week.

49ers vs. Seahawks Gambling Odds & Handicapping Preview

The Seattle Seahawks need a lot of help to get in the playoffs but at least a run in which they won five of six games has fans seeing Pete Carroll’s vision for the team. Seattle has been good on both sides of the ball. Now they have to prove it against the Best in the NFC West.

Seattle won on the road last week in impressive fashion. This week they are at home where the 12th Man will be fired up to excess. Advantage Seahawks! Their job is to solve a 49ers defense that has been magnificent and only gave up three points to Pittsburgh last week.

Marshawn Lynch, no matter how good he’s been is going to find it very tough to get anything going. Tarvaris Jackson is going to have to be more of a factor.

Seattle has the 23rd ranked passing game but with injuries in the receiving corp. it is hard to imagine the Hawks stacking up in this one.

No Sidney Rice and no Mike Williams means that Golden Tate, Doug BaldwinBen Obomanu and maybe even Zach Miller will be in charge making Tarvaris look good.

Seattle’s running game has averaged an impressive 147.7 yards per game over their last seven and Marshawn Lynch has scored in an incredible 10 straight games. Success won’t come easy however against the 49ers incredible run stoppers.

Dave’s Free Seahawks Betting Prediction

Seattle’s defense is 13th against the pass and 11th versus the run – good enough to at least slow down the plodding 49ers attack.

  • The San Francisco 49ers are 10-2 SU and 9-1-1 ATS in their last 12 games but are just 6-15 SU in their last 21 on the road.
  • The 49ers are 2-6 SU in their last eight trips to Seattle and are 2-5 ATS in their last seven visits to the Pacific Northwest.
  • The Seattle Seahawks are 5-1 SU in their last six games and are 6-3 SU and 7-2 ATS in their last nine at home.
  • They are 8-1 ATS in their last nine games against the NFC. The home team has covered the Spread in the last five meetings.

The San Francisco 49ers are one of the more balanced teams in the NFL but so were the Baltimore Ravens when they visited the Pacific Northwest earlier this season.

But the main problem that the Seahawks have in this game is the fact that their offensive strength plays right into the hands of the 49ers strength on defense.

If Marshawn Lynch is taken away, the Hawks are a significantly weaker team.

I like the 49ers to limit Lynch’s effectiveness and to win by a field goal in this one.

Pick: San Francisco 49ers -1 ½
