In-Depth: A closer look at Seahawks QB Russell Wilson

Get to know Russell Wilson

The Seattle Seahawks wowed some people and had others guessing for a good portion of the 2012 NFL Draft. Many choices were questioned, but there has been 1 unanimous stellar pick as reported by every “expert” and pundit in the masses.

That unanimous popular pick was the Seahawks third round selection.

In the 3rd round of the 2012 NFL Draft, the Seattle Seahawks selected Russell Wilson – QB – Wisconsin.

My Assessment

Russell Wilson was by far one of my favorite quarterbacks in this draft. With the exception of Luck and RGIII, I liked Wilson as the #3 QB in the draft. I had him mocked in the 6th round when I originally wrote my mock draft, but am happy he went much sooner.

Gruden loved him so much after his QB Camp that he and Mel Kiper had a heated argument on-air about him.

His size is deceptive and he gets knocked for it a lot, but he has dealt with it his whole life and has excelled every step of the way. With 2 potential starting quarterbacks on the roster, Pete and John went and made sure the QB position on this team was going to give them the very best chance at winning games through the future 3 man competition.

Russell Wilson will heat up the Seattle QB competition in a big way

Russell Wilson’s athletic ability is never questioned, but people do think he has a tendency to be a run first QB.

Those people are dead wrong.

Wilson is an astute passer who likes to stand in the pocket and distribute passes all over the field.

He has great accuracy and has no problem leading receivers and throwing the ball in front of them. A lot of college quarterbacks lack that detail in their passing game and have to improve on it before getting a real shot at starting.

Wilson won’t have this issue.

He can throw far down field as he has a very strong arm. He puts great touch on passes when needed and lofts them into small spaces for his receivers.

He is not one to leave his receivers high and dry to take bone crunching hits in the middle of the field.

He possesses great speed and can outrun most defenders if he is forced out of the pocket and has to take off on a play. His ability to scramble and avoid tackles in the backfield allow him to extend plays a lot of the time.

The best aspect of this guy is his intelligence. He knows football. He knows multiple styles of offense.

Hardly anyone in college can tell you they know two different systems of offense used in the NFL. Wilson can. He played his first 3 years at NC State before transferring to Wisconsin for his senior season.

He got to Wisconsin on July 1 and had the playbook memorized by July 21st.

College Stats

2011: 225/309 (72.8%), 3175 yards, 33 touchdowns, 4 interceptions. 79 rushes, 338 yards, 6 touchdowns. 3 receptions, 56 yards, 1 touchdown.

2010: 308/527 3563 yards, 28 touchdowns, 14 interceptions. 143 rushes, 435 yards, 9 touchdowns.

This was a huge pick by the Seahawks. Between Matt Flynn and Wilson, they have their QBOTF. Tarvaris Jackson and Flynn had better watch out. Wilson won’t go down the depth chart quietly.
