Thursday In Seahawksville
Fines for late or dirty hits are commonplace in the NFL these days, especially when the victim is a quarterback, but Raheem Brock’s case is a curious one indeed.
The Seahawks defensive end was fined $15,000 by the NFL this week for what was deemed a low hit on Pittsburgh Steelers pivot Ben Roethlisberger last Sunday. In the “protect the quarterback” era, any hit below the knee or above the shoulder pads can be deemed illegal.
Brock was not happy with the flag or the fine. He Tweeted:
“Fined by the NFL today for being ‘TRIPPED’ by an o’lineman and fallin into the QB’s legs! Smh if I only had super powers to stop mid air”
Watching the replay shows Brock has a legit case. He’s clearly tripped by rookie Marcus Gilbert and falls into Big Ben’s leg unintentionally. So what gives? How could the NFL miss this?
The bigger question is whether or not the NFL cared. The fine could be a case of retribution for commissioner Roger Goodell, who already had a bone to pick with Brock.

During the lockout, Brock and former Seahawk Chester Pitts video-pranked Gooddell. He didn’t take the joke very well.
Naturally, he had no power to discipline Brock at the time, so the general perception was that Goodell would pounce on Brock the first time the Seattle defender did anything remotely wrong.
Flash forward to Week 2 and Goodell got his opportunity.
Maybe the commish didn’t even watch the replay, instead just slapping down the $15,000 fine as soon as he saw that Brock was the offender.

Was Goodell right to put a player in his place for undermining his authority during the offseason?
Or is this blatantly biased behavior?
I lean toward the latter.
