Four in camp…who wins?
The Seattle Seahawks went all out in hopes for a legitimate starting quarterback this off-season. Picking up the talented Matt Flynn in free agency, and drafting hopeful stud Russell Wilson in the 3rd round of this years draft.
Both were brought in to challenge incumbent starter Tarvaris Jackson for his job. Which I think will ultimately result in Jackson’s dismissal from the team.
In the last two weeks, I have done pieces in which I spell out the reasons why Russell Wilson will be, and won’t be the next great Seahawks QB.
But in my eyes, I see Matt Flynn being named the starter. Unless there is a freak injury, this is hands down his gig. You just don’t bring in a free agent like him to sit on the bench, no matter what happens in camp.
Bred to succeed
With a history of playing in the national championship game with LSU, and being the backup in one of the most storied franchises in all of the NFL, Flynn has the resume to be a long time starter in this league.
Just look at what he did last season in his lone start for the Packers. 400 plus yards passing! Those were Aaron Rodgers style numbers, who just happened to be his mentor in Green Bay.
I’m sure that Rodgers was a little happy to see him go, knowing that the move makes him that much more valuable to the Packers.

Style of QB that we need
With the past years second half success, Pete Carroll wants to start up where we left off last season.
And what better way to do that than bring in a QB with pocket passer status like Flynn.
Jackson did a good job with this team last year, but his willingness to run from the pocket instead of staying in and being tough is something that Carroll wanted to address.
Flynn is a man’s man style QB. He will take the hit while the ball is coming out of his hands. Like a younger version of Brett Favre, he will hold the ball till the very last moment, waiting for the most opportune time to find his open receivers.
Not saying that scrambling to avoid a sack is a bad thing, but to take off for a two yard gain instead of waiting that extra second to find your receiver will not win you too many ball games.
The reality
This is why Flynn will win, and Jackson will be looking for a new job.
We pay too much to have either one of them sitting on the bench, and that is why I believe we brought in Wilson as well in this years draft.
Jackson will land on a team, no problem. He may not make it onto a team early enough to become a starter this year, but he will be a valuable backup for a team.
Flynn is the QB we have been looking for ever since the demise of Matt Hasslebeck. Coach Carroll finally got smart and gave up on Charlie Whitehurst, and Jackson was the best available at the time, biding time for a franchise QB to become available.
As fans we always want to win now. And for the better part of this century, we have. But sometimes you have to have faith in management that they are doing what’s best for the team.
If that means eating a season and waiting for next years free agency class, then that’s what’s best for the team.
I am still having a hard time with this, as I am very stubborn, and very impatient. But I think that PCJS got it right on this one.
