Seahawks MMQB: Defensive juggernaut grounds Jets

Jets couldn’t take off

Boxscore | Play-by-Play | Q’s Post Game Recap

They couldn’t even leave the hanger…

The only flight that was allowed near CenturyLink Field on Sunday was a pre-game fly over to honor this countries Veterans.  I would like to thank all of those who have served, and continue to serve, this country to protect the freedoms we enjoy daily.

As I am sitting here typing this piece, it is not lost on me that without their efforts, and sacrifice, I would not be able to write this.  I would also like to thank the Military Sea-hawkers for the invitation to attend their post game celebration.

It was great to meet some of the finest young men this nation has to offer.

By the way. The Seahawks won 28-7 over the visiting Jets. We are now 5-0 at home in the 2012/13 season.

12th man

Last week I called us out for not brining the type of intensity that I am used to hearing at CenturyLink Field.  I wasn’t the only one who called the 12th man out.  Tim Tebow, when asked about the crowed noise in Seattle, admitted he had never been here and then said, “Pretty much most SEC places are a lot louder.”

I wonder how he feels now that he has actually been here?

The 12th man caused 3 false starts Sunday, extending the CenturyLink Field’s lead over Minnesota’s Mall of America Field to 4.

Weather

For the first time this season the weather was pretty miserable at CenturyLink.  After reading the weather report by William Ingram on NWSPS12.com, I knew what to expect.  For those of you that don’t know, that is the site that I run, but I’m not just using this as a shameless self promotion, he is pretty much dead on every game.

William (Active Duty Navy) puts his report out late on the Saturday night before the games.  He waits so long so that he is able to watch weather models and gives the most accurate forecast for the specific hours that matter to Seahawks fans the most.

I was prepared as far as clothing was concerned, however my body was unprepared for the cold during pre-game, and I was freezing in the stadium until the opening kick off.  Don’t get me wrong, I am happy it is finally winter, I just needed more than 2 days of fall to adjust to cooling temperatures.

I have been waiting for a game that was cold and wet because I wanted to see if Russell Wilson was going to use gloves or just a hand warmer.  So far, he is only using the hand warmer.

The cold weather didn’t seem to effect his throwing but he did have 2 fumbles in the game.

Offense

Speaking of the rookie quarterback, I paid close attention to Russell Wilson warming up on Sunday.  The last time I stood around and focused on him was before the Patriots game.  Wow, he is a completely different quarterback.

Wilson has a confidence about him that shows he now owns the Seahawks offense.  It is clear to me that Russell is now the best quarterback on the team.

It wasn’t all glory for the rookie.  On two consecutive plays, Wilson tried to do too much and was sacked.  The first time he lost 12 yards, the second time he lost the football.

The Jets took that fumble to the house, the only time they scored all game.  Russell needs to get rid of the ball when no one is getting open and the offensive line isn’t blocking.

The offensive line really struggled with the complex pass rush schemes of the Jets defense.

Some guy, in the restroom after the game, asked the question “Did Wilson even have a positive play all game?”

I bit my tongue at the time because I prefer not talking to people at the urinal, but I wanted to respond “It’s a good thing you come here to drink, because you don’t know football.”

I realize Wilson made some mistakes on the field today, he’s a rookie that is what I expect from him, but he had some amazing throws, including his touchdown passes to Sidney Rice and Golden Tate, in which he showed poise on several occasions, and showed off his leadership skills.

Golden Tate showed off his arm when he connected on 23-yard touchdown pass to Sidney Rice.  I have to give Darrell Bevell a lot of credit for the play call, more specifically the personnel used.

The Seahawks have run similar plays in the past using Sidney to throw the ball, but Golden Tate had never thrown a pass in the NFL so no one was expecting him to throw it.

Danny O’Neil tweeted that Rice commented after the game, “His throwing motion was the worst.  I thought we traded for Tebow for a second.”  Nope Sidney, that was Tate, the one with a touchdown pass this season.

Golden Tate

In addition to a sweet grab, Golden Tate showed off his arm today too!

The Seahawks ran the ball for 174-yards, 124 of which were by Marshawn Lynch.  Sunday was the 4th game in a row, and 6th time this season, that Marshawn has topped the century mark.

One hundred plus yards are becoming so common that it is little more than a foot note, that is attributed to Tom Cable and the offensive line as well as Lynch himself.

Congrats to Lynch for going over 1000 yards too. Congrats to the O-line for that achievement as well.

Also worth noting, Zach Miller caught 5 passes for the first time since joining the Seahawks.

Defense

For the second week in a row the Seahawks pass defense was absolutely dominant. Over the last two weeks the defense has given up a total of 145 yards through the air.

It is important to note that both the Vikings and Jets passing attacks are in the bottom third of the league, nevertheless they both averaged more yards per game than they were able to get against the Seahawks, combined.

As exciting as it was to watch the Seahawks defense only give up 185-yards, I was more impressed that on the two drives where New York threatened to score, the Seahawks simply took the ball away.

More specifically, Richard Sherman took the ball away from them.  First he intercepted a Mark Sanchez pass at the goal line, then he sacked Mark, causing a fumble that was recovered by Jason Jones.

The Seahawks had three sacks.

Don’t forget to get your free Jumbo Jack with your ticket stub (never let them keep your stub, I have talked to the team and the venders are to mark the ticket, not keep them), 2 of which were from rookie Bruce Irvin who is now tied for 10th in the NFL this season with 7 sacks total.

A lot of people wanted to see Mario Williams come to Seattle in free agency, but, like most of the league, he’s looking up at Irvin’s sack total wishing he had that many.

The third down defense was really good on Sunday, limiting the Jets to converting on only 2 of 11 attempts.  That was a big reason why the Seahawks were able to win the time of possession battle by over 12 minutes.

After starting the game roughly, the Seahawks came out of the tunnel during the second half and proved they were the better team, beating the Jets 28-7.  28 points earned you a free Short stack of pancakes at IHOP this week, with your ticket stub.

It is great to be headed into the bye week on a mini two game winning streak.  Hopefully after a little extra rest the Seahawks will be healthy heading into Miami on the 25th.

As of now, the Seahawks control their on destiny.

After ten games, I like being in that position, especially considering that they have been starting a rookie quarterback since the beginning of the season.

I haven’t heard what Pete Carroll plans to do with the team during the bye week, I am assuming they have earned a little bit of a reprieve.

Go Seahawks!
