Bruce Irvin gets sacked by the NFL

Irvin suspended

It is no secret that Bruce Irvin and I don’t have the best relationship.  I am not exactly sure what I did to piss him off, but it must have been something.  He’s not the first player, nor will he be the last, that I haven’t seen eye to eye with.

Still, I do my best to evaluate those players the same as I would a player who I like, or one that I have never met.  To be honest, I don’t really even have a problem with Bruce Irvin, I just think he is a one-trick pony.

Today it was announced that Bruce would be suspended for the first four games of the 2013 season.  I never want to see any Seattle Seahawks player suspended for any reason.

That said, I’d be lying if I said I wouldn’t prefer seeing it happen to him over another member of the team.

When I first heard that Irvin had been suspended for using Performance Enhancing Drugs (PEDs), I assumed it was steroids or something else to help him bulk up.  About an hour later, Dave “Softy” Mahler reported that Bruce was suspended for using Adderall.

I cannot comprehend how a player who needs to add size as much as Bruce does, and who is willing to cheat, doesn’t use a substance that will improve his game in an area that is so badly needed.

Bruce just cannot take on defensive ends at the NFL level as small as he is.  Once they engage him, the play is over for Bruce.

After watching Winston Guy and Brandon Browner get suspended last season, as well as Richard Sherman fighting suspension for using Adderall, I would assume anyone would be smart enough to realize that using it is not worth the risk.

Apparently I was wrong.

Maybe he should have been taking Dopamine to improve his decision-making abilities.  Bruce has definitely made a strong case for the dunce of the offseason award.

At the very least, he has embarrassed himself, the team and the 12th man.

I also saw reports that the Seahawks may have known about this impending suspension before free agency.  If that is the case, they have had more than enough time to prepare their roster for such an event.

That could be the reason we saw the team add so many pass rushers this offseason.

After hearing about the suspension, I took a look at all the games where Bruce recorded a sack last season.  I started with the preseason all the way until the Divisional Round playoff game.  During that span, he had seven games where he recorded at least 0.5 sacks, and Seattle was 7-0 in those games.

He is a really good pass rusher, there is no doubt about that.  The team could have used him week 2 when they host the San Francisco 49ers – a team looking to pay the Seahawks back for the whooping they receive din Seattle last season.

All we can do now is hope that he has learned from his mistake and that he will be ready to hit the field running after the Houston Texans game.

His words today have sounded good, but what really matters is his actions. Come back strong for the Colts game Bruce.
