Seahawks: Seattle claims four players off waivers

The Seattle Seahawks pared their roster down to the mandatory 53 players over the weekend but their work wasn’t done.

On Sunday, they claimed four players off waivers: kicker Steven Hauschka from the Denver Broncos; offensive tackle Jarriel King from the New York Giants; defensive tackle Al Woods from the Tampa Bay Buccaneers; and defensive tackle Landon Cohen from the New England Patriots.

Bye Bye Jeff Reed! You Won't Be Missed!

To make room for their new additions, the Seahawks then cut kicker Jeff Reed, linebacker David Vobora and defensive tackles Lazarious “Pep” Livingston and Junio Siavii.

With Hauschka, it was a case of “if you can’t beat him, claim him.” He impressed by beating the Seahawks with a 51-yard, last-second field goal two weeks ago as a Bronco. Three of his five kickoffs in the preseason also went for touchbacks. The 26-year-old was just a reserve with Denver but is in line to start for the Seahawks.

Cohen is considered a somewhat undersized pass rusher for his position but with solid burst. Woods had been part of some very deep defensive lines in Tampa and Pittsburgh, so his availability on waivers didn’t necessarily reflect a lack of ability. That’s what the Seahawks hope, at least.

For the most part, the moves are low-impact. But we shouldn’t underestimate the kicker transaction. With their offense set to sputter and stall often in 2011, the Seahawks will need plenty of points from Hauschka.
