2014 Seahawks schedule released & some early predictions

Let the games begin

Before the announcement of the schedule I was willing to bet money that the Seattle Seahawks would host the Denver Broncos to open the NFL season.  Week two, in an unusual move, I expect the Seahawks to travel to San Francisco to open Levi Stadium against the 49ers.

In all actuality the Seahawks will host the Broncos in week 3 and will not play in Levi Stadium until Thanksgiving.

The NFL missed a golden opportunity to place the Super Bowl Champion in 2 epic match-ups to start the season. If I’m being honest it’s a very disappointing NFL Schedule for Seattle in 2014.

The Seahawks got a dealt an awful hand by the schedule makers this season.

When analyzing a schedule I like to take the approach of breaking the season up into four quarters.

First Quarter

The Seahawks kickoff the NFL season on September 4, when they hosting the Green Bay Packers ( as stated above it should have been the Broncos).

The game does have added interest as the Packers were the last defending Super Bowl Champion to win the NFL Kickoff Game.

Ten days later the Seahawks travel to Southern California to play the San Diego Super Chargers before heeding back home in a Super Bowl XLVIII rematch with Payton Manning and the Denver Broncos.

Unfortunately the Seahawks drew the short end of the stick when they were handed a week 4 bye.  Week 4 is the first week in the NFL schedule with a bye.

The Arizona Cardinals and St. Louis Rams join Seattle with a poor bye draw while the 49ers don’t have theirs until week 8.

That is quite a break for San Fran.

The Seahawks end their 1st quarter in Maryland against the Redskins.

Early prediction:  Seahawks open the season 3-1

Second Quarter

I guarantee Tony Romo was not happy when he looked at week 7 (Seahawks 6th game) and saw that he had to travel up to Seattle to play in CenturyLink Field.

A place that has not been very kind to him in the past and I don’t see his luck changing.

Seattle doesn’t play their first divisional game until they travel to St. Louis where they will face the always difficult Rams.

The game will take place in the dreaded 10 AM time slot but the Seahawks proved they can win at anytime day or night last season.

Speaking of 10 AM kickoffs, the following week the Seahawks travel to the Carolinas to face the Panthers.  Last season the Seahawks opened their season in Carolina and barely won 12-7.

The Seahawks should be able to end the first half of the season on a high note when they host the Raiders on November 2.  It will likely be the second time Seattle has beaten up on their former AFC West rival in 2014.

Prediction:  After 8 games the Seahawks look to be sitting pretty at 6-2

Third Quarter

Another Manning comes to town to open the third quarter of the season.  Eli will bring former Seahawk Walter Thurmond and the G-men to CenturyLink.  I look forward to watching Thurmond cover Percy Harvin in the slot.

After two straight home games the Seahawks travel to Kansas City to take on the Chiefs in Arrowhead Stadium.  This is the one AFC West team that worries me and it is because they have a legitimate defense.

Last season the Seahawks were only beaten at home once and that was by the Arizona Cardinals.

“It’s not how you start, it is how you finish”

The Cardinals will look to upset the Seahawks at home again on the Sunday before Thanksgiving.

I don’t see it happening.

Four days later the Seahawks have to travel to Levi Stadium to take on the 49ers.  It would be a brutal back to back games stretch on a typical week, which they face later in the season.

With only 3 days to recover between the games it will be torture on their bodies.

Luckily the Seahawks are young but I  just don’t see the Seahawks pulling off the victory.

Prediction:  This is when the losses will start to pile up as the Seahawks drop road games to the Chiefs and 49ers and will be headed into the final stretch of the season 8-4.

Fourth Quarter

“It’s not how you start, it is how you finish”

Well, it is not going to be easy to finish this season strong.

The team will start the final quarter by traveling to Philadelphia to take on the Eagles.  The way I see it this will be a “must win” game.

The final 3 games will be against division rivals with two of those being played in Seattle.

For the second time in 17 days the Seahawks and 49ers will meet, this time at CenturyLink.

Then it is off to Arizona to play under the Sunday Night lights.  With the NFC West championship hanging in the balance I think this game will be the deciding factor.  Unfortunately I think the Seahawks will lose and the 49ers will clinch the division because they will have beaten the Chargers on Saturday.

For the third straight year the Seahawks will face the Rams to end the season.  The Seahawks won the previous 2 games.

Seattle will end a difficult schedule with a very respectable 10-6 record and capture the NFC’s 1st Wild Card Spot.

If the Seahawks are going to become the 9th team to win back to back Super Bowls it is going to be a tough road.  The schedule makers made it as difficult as they possibly could.

Whether it was by design or happenstance  it really doesn’t matter.  Either way it is going to be brutal.

I have hope. . .

The Seahawks are as tough as any team I’ve seen.  And as the saying goes . . .

“When the going gets tough, the tough get going.”

Go Seahawks!!

In other Seahawks news:

  • Marcus Trufant will be signed by the Seahawks where he will then retire as a Seahawk.  My prediction is that he ends up in the Seahawks Ring of Honor before it is all said and done.
  • Russell Wilson and Ashton Wilson will be filing for divorce.  I have seen nothing from Russell that leads me to believe that he will allow this to become a distraction.  If anything he will become more focused, if that is humanly possible.
  • Scot McCloughan is stepping down from his position as a senior executive to the Seattle Seahawks.  Jason LaCanfora broke the story.  This is a big blow to the team as he is an expert at building a roster through the draft.  I wish him the best moving forward dealing with his personal matter.
